Darwin Day Celebration!

Celebrate Charles Darwin's birthday as we explore adaptations, fitness, natural selection and survival through activities and displays. Drop in! There will be activities for adults, activities for kids.

Indoors & Outdoors
**Dress warmly to explore the paths, frozen pond, and animal area.**

738 Thatcher Ave,
River Forest, IL 60305
Southwest corner at the intersection of Thatcher Ave. and Chicago Ave.

Trailside Museum of Natural History, part of the Forest Preserve District of Cook County, is a little-known hidden gem. It's more of a small nature center at the mouth of a forest, ponds, and trails, rather than what you'd expect of a museum. The building is an 1876 Victorian mansion. Trailside has resident animals (red fox, coyote, birds of prey) unable to live in the wild due to injuries, as well as aquariums with fish, amphibians, and reptiles. Lively bird watching too!

The parking lot entrance is on Chicago Ave. Additional street parking is marked with a painted "parking lane" such as on Thatcher Ave.

(Drivers: Feel free to offer to pick up public transit people from the nearby end of the Green Line train at Harlem & Lake.)

Public Transit (Be sure to check for yourself!)
If coming from downtown Chicago, you can take the Green Line to Harlem, then the #309 Bus to Thatcher Ave, walk 3 blocks north. Or take Metra's UP-W line, then walk 3 blocks north.

Here's an enthusiastic write-up from last year (their first ever Darwin Day Celebration) by a Chicago Skeptics member.

UPDATE from Forest Preserve staff:

In addition to the displays and adaptations scavenger hunt, we will have the following scheduled events for Darwin Day at Trailside Museum.

12:30: Charles Darwin and the Tree of Life
1:45: See a DNA extraction, including a short discussion on DNA and evolution
2:00 Darwin Trivia Game
2:30 Voyage to the Galapagos

That was a really fun event! It was nice to meet you Rachel, and we'll try to hang around and be more social at another event. I was ready for some time in the snow after roasting in the documentary room.

I'm fairly sure the Monkey and I came in second place in Darwin trivia. I hope the winner comes to more events :)

Please see the UPDATE to the description above for the scheduled activities. Trailside is a small nature center building, and I don't intend to be inside the whole time. Be sure to dress for the weather so you can join us in exploring nature itself, outdoors! There's a secret island to find in the woods. There are bushes with beautiful ice-covered orange berries to photograph, and 2 or 3 types of woodpeckers that stand out in the snow!

This will be my first event (was stationed in Hawaii) and I'm very exited. I should have my (much) younger brother in tow.

SAS has interest in attending. We have 4 + who definitely plan to attend. I will post this on our site and we can set up carpools from the Stateline area. Does anyone plan on doing lunch first? We will have a drive.

    Shortcut trail: http://goo.gl/maps/8MlX6

You can take this walking path if you're coming from public transit, or if you park in the parking lane south on Thatcher.
