What is Social Dance

Social Dance is a form of dance focused on socializing. This distinguishes it from other forms of dances such as ceremonial, competitive, performance, etc.

Social dance is usually a partner dance, i.e., it requires two people, a lead and a follow (traditionally the role of the lead is performed by a man, and the follow is a woman, and this is still the norm, although modern times have brought some flexibility and you may find women performing as leads and men willing to be follows.) In principle the lead is just supposed to "lead" the movements, while the follow "follows" the lead's clues, but when performed correctly the process is more like a complex non-verbal and very gratifying form of communication between two human beings.

Various classes of social dances are:

- Latin rhythms: salsa, merengue, rumba, mambo, cha-cha, bachata . . .

- Swings: est coast, west coast, lindy hop, hustle . . .

- Ballroom: waltz, foxtrot, quickstep, tango . . .
