Need help? Here's your opportunity!

Time for our quarterly get/provide help networking session.

Have a specific question about how to get your menus to work, install a plugin, tweak a theme? Now is your opportunity to get your questions answered. Please try and keep the request to 45 minutes or less, we'd like to make sure everyone gets a chance.

If you are a developer or designer for WordPress, please join us and help other folks out. (I know who you are, please come and help.) It will be a blast.

While you're here, order a burger or beer from our great host at the Holiday Club and network to your heart's content. There is no charge for this meetup.

Plugs and wifi are very limited at the Holiday Club. If you can bring a fully charged machine and a hot spot to share - that would be awesome.

Maybe this can happen before every meeting, taking 15-20mins to help someone out or get help.

As a newbie to WP, I found this Meetup group tremendously helpful!

    Hi WP folks,
I am so glad I showed up! I am a WP newbie and found the group very informative. I'm ready to get hosting and proceed with the idea I have to create an informational and resources site for a niche healthcare population. I have collected hundreds of resources (and counting) and want to make them available to patients in this population, as well as healthcare professionals. And make it look pretty :)

Wow! what a great group of helpful and smart folks. I can't believe the number of resources I learned about at this meet up. As a newbie looking for pointers in how to get started, I received several excellent recommendations. Thanks to all of the generous WP gurus who took time to help out. Thanks also to my fellow help-seekers; I learned from you, too!

    Hello!
Can anyone assist me in the Wordfence plugin? Details:
I'm unable to scan; I getting this error message:
"If you keep seeing this error it usually means your WordPress server can't connect to our scanning servers. You can try asking your WordPress host to allow your WordPress server to connect to noc1.wordfence.com."

I'm unsure of what it means.
Thank you, I plan on attending tonight!

Hi all. I'm in the early stages of making a WP site that will eventually catalog 100+ online collections of personal narratives: http://dev.storiesthatwork.org/. My aim is to get it functional enough for basic usability testing and then hire a prof. developer/designer to make it awesome. In this rough version, here's what I can't figure out:
    1) How to center the content on the home page: I've commented out the get_sidebar() code in my home.php file, but the space for the sidebar still remains.
    2) On mobile and small screens, the 2014 theme pushes the primary sidebar to the bottom of the page, so this page -- http://dev.storiesthatwork.org/search-stories/, the faceted search options end up below the search results. I'd like it above, and in general think through options for getting all of those search facets on both big and small screens in a usable way.
    3) How to style custom fields/custom taxonomy items (i.e., do I need to define new CSS classes for these?).
    Thanks!

    • Steven S.

As a dev who would be in the class of folks you might hire, I'd prefer that you not do too much theming/styling because I'd probably have to undo a lot of it. What I'd like is a really good set of wireframes and a style guide for colors, fonts, heading sizes, etc.

      September 3, 2014

    • Lisa D.

Thanks, Steven. That definitely crossed my mind -- not spending a ton of time doing things that will need to be undone -- but I've got to make the site pretty and functional enough to persuade the powers that be to give me some grant money to hire a developer!

Hi, here's what I'm struggling with: I'm using the Fruitful theme for a client's site, and there's too much space between all the headers/headings and the body copy.
I'm also not able to customize block quotes.

    September 2, 2014

    • Gina M.

Thanks Becky. I'm unsure what you mean by "themes files in a local environment" I think you or someone will have to show me. I'll bring my laptop to the meeting tomorrow evening.

      September 2, 2014

    • Rachel B.

Gina, If you bring a laptop I can help you with the CSS issues in your theme.

I'm bringing my brother too. He is having trouble with his dropdown menu. He wants the menu to open to the right if the browser window is too small. Also- should we bring laptops/ipads to this meeting? (First timer).

If you don't bring your own machine, you'll definitely need to know your login info, better to bring your own. Please see notes above about access & power. Hot Spots encouraged.

Working on a premium theme "Atlas" it's a Directory theme. Having trouble with the user profile. It is very basic. I would like to add Image upload for users. I know how to tweak function.php to add extra fields but don't know how to add the ability for users to Upload Images to their profile. Also, need the user fields to be searchable. TY.

    • Tushar S.

      Hi,

The ads for Atlas seem to say that you don't need to hack functions.php--everything is available from the front end.

I couldn't find documentation for Atlas but maybe we can figure this one out ...

I'm interested in creating real estate websites and thought creating child themes to tweak and personalize themes would be the way to go; however, I am not able to figure out how my code differs from the exercise I'm following on Lynda.com -- my child theme indicates the stylesheet is missing -- so I've come to a halt.

Since I wasn't able to resolve that situation, I began working with the Tampa (real estate) theme created by Placester. I like it and would like another opinion(s).

    August 29, 2014

    • Tushar S.

Pretty sure a number of people can reunite your stylesheet with your child theme, and I also think this sort of problem is most quickly solved in person!

      August 30, 2014

    • Bob W.

Bring your laptop and you should be able to go home with the child theme working.

Looking for help with my WP site.

Can you be more specific there are a lot of people who can help. Most people specialize in very different areas of WordPress. So let us know if your having problems with hosting, getting started, child themes, plugins or anything else.

    Kimberly.
1.I offer WordPress hosting at my website if your interested.
    2. That's Great :-P
3.Adsense but you can use an advertising plugin for advertising and a widget for Adsense.
    4. There are a lot of templates out there and widgets are great so I would suggest finding a template that is pleasing to you and the customers you are trying to attract and then using widgets to accommodate the advertising.
    5. You pay for the rights to use it on one website, usually.
    6. You can use the Google translation plugin for this and its also good for SEO.
    7. Not Necessarily. Responsiveness is usually element by element. You would need to find a theme that resizes the logo in the demo.
Hope this helps get you started in the right direction. Great Questions! :-P

    Hello WP Meetup group.
I am looking to get the following info:

1- Can you recommend a Hosting company?.
2- I want to develop a responsive site for a niche market.
This is NOT a blog and I am not selling anything.
I am just providing lists of resources and targeted stories.
3- The site will be monetized with advertising I secure, and AdSence.
4- Can anyone suggest a customizable responsive template, ideal for advertising?
There are sooo many options. I want to be able to track visitors, etc.
5- Do you own the template, or is it something you pay for yearly to use?
6- If this business idea works, I want to develop a Spanish language version.
Is it best to plan for that now, or wait?
7- If I make a business logo in PhotoShop, will it automatically become responsive, if I insert it into a responsive template?

I am looking forward to this Meetup.

What he said. I was assuming we would talk about this at the meetup. That way you get at least a couple of opinions.

I don't know the rules, so I'll refrain from putting my contact info here for now.

Tony (and anybody else who may come looking for help) - as you can see, there will be folks there willing to help. (Thanks Tushar & Steve) If you know what specific things are giving you grief, feel free to post them here. That way helpers can be more prepared and you will be more likely to get the help you need. This is an amazing group, don't be afraid to ask!

If anybody wants to know something of a technical nature (plugins, anything "custom", javascript, server, installation, PHP, mysql, anything called "backend", etc) I might be able to help.

I will even read up on it if I know in advance.

Show up and ask.. we'll be waiting!
