Interesting turn of events in Boulder Junction. They are going to have dual sports and loaded adventure bikes in their local 4th of July parade.

    Second video from the weekend.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6qbU29bwzEA
This was where Matt, Jim F and I decided to go do the NH abbreviated route after doing the NH route earlier. Made for a 210 mile day. This is a edited down version of the 17 minute fun section at the end of the loop (or the beginning if you were running it backwards like we were to ensure we did the most fun part before it got dark.

First video of the weekend. It's the 140 mile Northern Highlands route. http://youtu.be/RagJCIP7f5Y

As always click the gear icon on bottom right and select 1080p and then click the rectangle icon to view in full screen for the clearest video. Those on mac need to use Chrome or Firefox browsers to get 1080p option as Safari browser uses HTML5 and YouTube doesn't play 1080p in HTML5. If you are the rider in the video with Jason and I after his "scenic adventure" please let me know who you are. I enjoyed riding with you, but your name has eluded me and I wanted to list you in the riders section at the end.

Another great video JT. Another ride that I wished I got to this year. Work just seems to always get in the way. As a true Cubs fan, all I can say is..."wait til' next year".

    Hi Everyone,

I want to thank you all for coming to our First Dual Sport Ride. Sam and I are trying to put together a video of the time lapse photos that we took and some of the gopro video that we were able to get as well. I would love to include the pictures and video that you all took! If you could email them to me or below is a link to put them into my drop box:

I felt like I was at a district 17 enduro with the amount of people that showed for this one and the type of riding we were experiencing. Like snowmobile trails then sand road to blacktop. I enjoyed meeting new friends and riding with old ones. I hope I can get the time off for the fall ride if they have one or we will need to make our own up.
I will not forget our Sat. afternoon ride that we left at 5 for a 70+ mile ride.

What a terrific weekend. Was not sure I would enjoy the level of road content, but trying to keep up with Matt on whatever terrain where he was throwing his roost made it a worthy challenge. Special KUDOS to Woodstock KTM and Cannonshot for going to extra efforts to make it easier and more enjoyable for all the rest of us. Also to JT for being such a terrific group leader. He must have been in the Marines because "he leaves no man (nor woman) behind." Each time I attend an event I meet more and more folks for the first time and get to see others that I don't see that often. Great weather, good friendship and terrific riding. It was just an added bonus that Camp Holiday was also a super friendly and really clean campground. I hope WI gets even more into the swing of wanting to host more motorcycling. Until next time......

Wow what a AWESOME weekend. Huge shout out of thanks to Sam, Brittany, Paul and Nick from Woodstock KTM for thinking of this event and making it happen for CDSR. Blows my mind all the effort they put into it for us.

Also huge thanks to Cannonshot for all the tracks and help with the event and promoting Dual-Sporting. I am so proud of how everyone worked as a group, making informal riding groups, leaving no one behind, challenging each other, etc. It was great seeing old friends and making new ones both on the trail and around the campfire.

Thanks again to all that made for a special weekend.

WOW! My sentiments as well. KUDOS to KTM of Woodstock ! The fact that a shop would put so much into this start up promotion is GREAT !! Then there is the commitment to the sport from Bryan Much A.K.A. Cannonshot, the gps tracks as well as proofing, working with the local municipality & the continued education of the masses about our sport. Boulder Junction & a few of its leaders, Jeff & Mike to spend the time, effort & energy to not only support this event but, to promote dual sport motorcycling in the area. This was a GREAT event which took ALL to make it happen so smoothly. What a sport & what great people to share it with.. The tracks we rode were great the local vendors were great & we had people of all ages asking questions & saying that they thought it seemed like a good idea to be supportive. THANK YOU Sam,Brittany,Paul & a few others from the shop of KTM of Woodstock. Thank You Cannonshot, THANK YOU BOULDER JUNCTION!

  • Bryan M.

What a great time! Huge thanks to Sam and Brittany for coordinating camping and meals for this informal get-together. Many thanks to Woodstock KTM for loaning some of their equipment to support the group in the base camp and in the event someone had a breakdown and needed a bike picked up. Feedback from the community is that we were very welcome there and they want this group to come back sometime in the future. Sounds like people were able to choose rides from the local catalog that best suited their individual interests making for a great experience for everyone. All-in-all a good time!

    4 · June 22, 2014

    • Chad B.

Bryan, Thanks again for the great routes and all of your work in promoting dual sport riding! It was very cool to see the community support and to have people talk to us and ask questions about dual sport riding.

Also, huge thanks to Sam, Brittany and the whole Woodstock crew for hosting such an amazing event. It blows my mind that a dealership would put on something like this for their customers, for me that says a lot!

I will be picking up John Kerr, in Rockford around 1:30-2:00 with a truck and trailer, I could have room for one more if anyone wants to ride or haul to this area and put a bike in a trailer or meet me/us some were from Dekalb on 39 to Wis.

      June 17, 2014

  • Scott A.

Based on my KDX 200 being stock with a small tank and stock gearing I'm bowing out. This might be over my head. My bike is plated and registered but not intended for any real street riding. Its just to get me across the road to connect trails.

    June 16, 2014

    • John P.

Scott, I usually ride with a Camelback with a few tools, a quart of oil, small mixing bottle and on longer rides 2 1L msr aluminum fuel bottles of premix (not recommended, a little dangerous) I'll be running knobs, they're about ready to go anyways. Mixing at the gas pump is not too difficult, as long as you can measure your oil. I usually run 32:1 on the road, because it's 4 Oz per gallon, easy to break down in 1/4 gal increments at the gas pump. You're welcome to tag along with me, but my buddy and I are running blind looking for someone with a GPS too.

      June 16, 2014

    • Scott A.

Thanks for the info everyone. I've decided to skip this ride. I'm going to do the Trempealeau county guided ride instead. I'll keep an eye on future rides though.

I have to un-rsvp. I had a place reserved for my bike on the Woodstock KTM trailer, so there might be an open spot now. Sounds like an amazing ride, wish I could be there...

    June 16, 2014

  • Scott A.

I talked to Brittany and she said it would be fine for me to only ride Sunday. I have a few questions for you riders. I have a 2004 Kawasaki KDX200 that I have plated and registered. I can maybe get 50to 60 miles from a tank of gas. Is there gas fill ups? How many miles between them? Would my bike be a good choice for this ride?also I don't have a GPS. ,I have a roll chart holder but there are no roll charts available. Could I tag along with someone with a GPS?

    June 15, 2014

    • JT

Hi Scott, I'll try to answer some of your questions. Gas is usually available by about 60 miles, so you may want to bring a small gas container like those quart ones. As far as gps many people will be without and group riding with others. Note to all who will ride with me as group leader - you are responsible for waiting for person behind you at each turn, failure to do this is about the only way I will toss you off my group! As to if it's the correct bike, depending in gearing you may be wringing it out on some of the paved or gravel sections. I'm trying to decide on my 250xc 2-stroke or 453 rfs myself.

      June 15, 2014

    • Matt

      Did you decided yet?

      June 16, 2014

  • Scott A.

JT thanks for the info. How much pavement is involved? Are we hitting gas stations or doing a 60 mile loop back to the camp site to refill? Thanks

    June 15, 2014

    • JT

Not sure how much pavement. Brittany sent over multiple routes. I know Saturday is the Nortephern Highlands route. Dave K and some others have done it. Maybe he or Cannonshot can join the conversation and comment on pavement mileage. As to gas it would be at a gas station not back at camp.

      June 15, 2014

    • Bryan M.

No one can answer a how much pavement question that covers all of the routes involved. It should be understood that this is a dual sport ride that involves pavement, gravel, and dirt of varying proportions. Most riders require gas stop(s) while on the route depending on the range of a particular bike. Feel free to open the available GPS files to get the best answers to your questions. :)

I have a Garmin and it seems that I can load GPS files to it via sd micro card or bu cable but I have yet to figure out how. I was successful loading one point of interest to it. Is there someone here that is the resident "expert" with Garmins ? I live near Midway and work near Roselle so I am interested in hooking up with someone who can show me how these GPS files work.

    May 8, 2014

    • JT

Bring it along to the ride. It's about a 30 second job to connect via cable to a laptop and transfer file. We can show you how. Or if you are close to Palatine you can come by and I will show you how to do.

      May 8, 2014

    • Paul T

I have connected it with a cable but I think I didn't know how to prep the file or maybe the transfer software I was using didn't work well. I will definitely bring it with me.

I have forwarded the email to JT.

    • Brian L.

Can one of you forward it to me. I haven't received it either.

      May 8, 2014

  • Bryan M.

Just as a point of clarification, there is a typo in JT's remarks. There is no fee involving the GPS tracks. I have a catalog of tracks for Boulder Junction that are always available for everyone to ride for free. I did pick out seven nice rides that I thought would work well for riders that plan to informally get together up there for a weekend. I shared those with Sam so he can make it a little easier for people to get the tracks ahead of time so they can get an idea of what they might want to ride on their own in informal small groups. My personal favorite of the bunch is the Northern Highland track. Hoping for excellent weather!

    1 · March 20, 2014

    • Bryan M.

My tracks for a variety of rides based out of Boulder Junction can be downloaded here: http://dco43054.com/p... The forests will officially open May 22d (late this year) because of long lasting snow and wet conditions. Let me know if you put together a group for that weekend and I'll share some additional information with you.

Stupid question - Is this a guys trips or do most of you bring wife and/or family ?

    April 7, 2014

    • David K.

No, good question. But it is a big unknown. CDSR has never had a trip quite like this and I believe Woodstock KTM is new to this type of ride. There are often some wives (and husbands) and children at the CDSR rides at FVOR and Kenbob's place. It's a good time for everyone.

      April 8, 2014

    • Bryan M.

There are things to do for wives and family in Boulder Junction and the surrounding area.

      April 9, 2014

  • Bryan M.

Thinking more about those routes, I think I would make it a point to ride the NH-AL dual sport track regardless of skill level. By breaking into ability groups that have different paces, everyone would get a satisfying ride. The route is suitable for KLRs as well. I'm sure that some that have ridden it (like Dave Koenig) would agree. A nice ride for Saturday for nearly everyone!

    March 15, 2014

    • Bryan M.

If you go to www.cannonshot.net and scroll down the ride reports page, you will find some info on the NHAL route.

This sounds like a great time, but I'll be out of town. Have fun!

    March 15, 2014

  • Bryan M.

I can help you guys sort out the routes you might be interested in depending on your skill level and interests. One route that is VERY popular is the ride through the NHAL state forest. It takes most of the day and is quite a blast. Some people have ridden it four or five days in a row. I have a good variety of tracks in the area so everyone should have a blast even with varied bikes and skill levels.

    2 · March 14, 2014

  • jim f.

Camp Holiday sounds good to me maybe we could take over the blue[masked] areas what do the rest of you think.
We should find a sat. and Sun. route that most of us would be interested in to many to choose.

    March 14, 2014

  • D.L.Martin

The Boulder area camping and off raod trails in that area look cool, cant wait for this ride. Thanks to Woodstock KTM and the dual sport club doing all this work. To a comment i read from Brittany, about the $25 dollar sign up fee, HELL YES thats a bargin !

    March 14, 2014

  • Bryan M.

I can offer some information that might be helpful. Boulder Junction has taken the initiative to become a dual sport destination. There is a nice campground just outside of town. http://www.camp-holiday.com/location.htm I scouted and prepared dual sport and road rides in the area that are ready to download and ride with no additional work required. Points of interest are included with the files as are gas stops, etc. I've really scoured the area for the best paths so you would be getting nice rides on these loops.

The Boulder Junction based rides can be found here: http://dco43054.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=55

If you decide you want to base out of Boulder Junction I can connect you with a contact there that will help you square away anything that needs to be done. Of course, I develop and publish these tracks at my expense for non-commercial use.

I have thousands of miles of tracks in that region so groups can base out of other locations for future not for-profit events.

    1 · March 13, 2014

    • Bryan M.

I would think you would be able to negotiate a favorable rate for your group at the campground. There are also several other campgrounds nearby Boulder Junction in the NH-AL State Forest. They take reservations. http://dnr.wi.gov/top...

      March 13, 2014

    • Bryan M.

One more thing, if you look at the tracks you will see there are a variety of options of a variety of bikes and skill levels. People will be able to choose small group rides based on their bike, skill level, and preferences. Don't discount the road rides. Some of them are sporty and fun on any bike - even a small dual sport!

Just bought a '08 KLR650 and trying to get back into some offroad riding after 25 year break. Is this trip for smaller more nimble bikes or would I be OK with my KLR not having recent offroad experience ? Will there be much fire roads or easy double track roads ?

    February 25, 2014

    • Chad B.

The route won't be finalized until May, so there is a lot of time to figure out who is going, and what bikes will be present. When we know this, we will set up the route accordingly. I will probably be riding a DR650, so it will probably be challenging, but doable for 650's. Big bikes will be more of a challenge and smaller bikes should still have a lot of fun, but an easier time!
