FISHING CHARTER ON LAKE MICHIGAN - ADULTS ONLY

Salmon fishing the Great Lakes is a unique experience geared towards those who are looking for more of a fishing adventure and hands on experience.

Although most clients allow Captain Matt to choose the species and style to fish, if you have a preference, let us know when you book the trip and we will custom design a trip to fit your desires.

Whether it is Acrobatic Steelhead, Reel Screaming Kings, Arm Busting Lakers, Huge Brown Trout, or just catch as many fish as possible, it is all at your fingertips if you so desire.

You have probably never been on a fishing expedition like Jackpot Fishing Charters before, and once you have tried it, you will be hooked

 COST  $94 + Captain's Tip

  Charter Trip: 5 hours  $550
$ 94 per person (rate based on 6 people)
$110 per person (rate based on 5 people)

Note: Price does not include fishing license nor the tip for the Captain. We usually tip him $10-$20 each person. He'll filet & bag the fish for us. If you want them whole, he’ll gut & bag them.

Ray Jr & I would like to thank Barbra, Matt and Kelly and Jackpot Fishing Charters (Eric was our captain that morning) for a most enjoyable morning of fishing. All the fish we caught were Coho salmon. I weighed the 3 fish I kept whole/gutted when I got home. Gutted they were 2 ½, 3 and 3 ½ pounds. So they were probably 3, 3 ½ & 4 pounds coming out of the water. So with Matt’s “monster” Coho and Kelly’s juvenile, I’m estimating we hauled in 27 to 32 pounds of Coho.

Haha I prefer the term "petite" regarding the little fish I caught :)

Does anyone know about how much the one day fishing license they sell on the boat costs?

    July 17, 2013

    • Matt

Per their website, Illinois is $6, Wisconsin is $14. Hafta call them the day before the trip to see which one you need if you're not buying it on the boat.

You will be able to purcase the one day fishing for either state license on the boat. In all likelyhood we are going to be in Illinois waters so don't prepurchase a Wisconsin license.

The Charter is $550 for up 6 participants. Right now with 4 it would be $138 apiece + tip (you paying for 1/2 the Charter at $276 + tip.) I'll see if another 1 or 2 want to sign up. With 6 its $92 + tip. Throw out some dates (like George below) that I can check for availability.

Last call! At the end of June I'm cutting off the sign-up period for the charters. I will not schedule any other dates.

We have 4 of us from Meetup who have committed to this charter. If no one else commits, I’ll go outside the group to fill the remaining 2 spots. Charter is 5 hrs, Sunday morning July 28 leaving from Winthrop Harbor. We’ll be back to port with our limit by 10 am. Plan on being there by 4:30. Charter leaves at 5am.

This is the type of fishing where the Charter captain has the experience. All we do is crank them in. You'll have a lot of fun.

This is getting to 1st come 1st serve. Jackpot's Charters are filling up fast, so we don't have as many dates available. I won't reserve any more dates (the morning of Sunday July 28 is the only reservation I made- so far) unless another 6 people come forward. I have an extra spot or 2 to the 1st person who wants to commit for July 28 (send me a check). This is a 5am departure time and we’ll be back to port by 10 am. This is the best time of day both for catching and not getting sunburn (out on lake for 5 hrs). This is an adults only excursion, there are no facilities to keep kids amused.

I'd like to book 1 dawn Charter (with 3-5 others for the charter) for July 20, or 21, or August 17, 18, 24 or 25. If another 2 or 3 want to lead their charters (i.e. make the deposit & collect the fees for those charters), please come forward. I'll work with you to get those charters lined up. If we have to cancel those due to lack of interest or commitment, we can always combine some groups and cancel a date. However once you send your money, it’s a commitment and we may not be able to offer a full refund. The only time Jackpot Charters have canceled was because of rough water.

I'm not but can handle some smoke in the open :-)

      June 7, 2013

  • Darcy

Hi Ray-thanks for planning. I'm available on any of those dates as of now and dont have a time preference. Not a big smoking fan though and definitely a novice fisher if that makes a difference?!

No, don't need experience. These charters are conducive to novice fishing. You don't even need to bait a hook (lures are used). The lines are set by the Captain, he starts trolling the waters, and he uses his sonar to find the fish. Then everyone sits back and decides what order we will crank them in. Once the fish strikes, the next person up starts reeling the fish in. The captain is at the stern with you, giving instructions and manning the net. Once it’s netted, we take a picture of you and the fish. Fish then gets thrown in the fish well, and on to the next fish. On the way in after we have our legal limit, the Captain fillets the fish. Or just guts the biggest salmon so we can take them home & cut them up into steaks for grilling. A morning charter will be pack to port by noon.

I don't smoke either. However I'm not sure about the others. I'll try and arrange for any smokers on their own trip. If we can't, there is no smoking in the cabin and the open stern is big enough where the smoker can be to one side with the smoke going out over the water. With the boat moving, any smoke should quickly blow away from the rest of us.

Send me responses for dates ASAP, and if you prefer the dawn patrol or an afternoon (1st, 2nd & 3rd choices please.) I’ll need to provide names.

Word from Captain Matt at Jackpot Charters is that June is mostly Coho salmon with some trout (Lake & Steelhead) and King salmon mixed in. Mid June- August is best for Kings, and Sept and Oct are good months for a mixed catch of trout and salmon. Jackpot provides all down-riggers, rods, reels, and tackle. Captain Matt sets out the lines & finds the fish. All you need to do is reel the fish in. He’ll even filet the fish for us. Unlike fish with harder mouths, salmon & trout have soft mouths so you don’t “set the hook”. Just step up when it’s your turn & start cranking. If you find a big fish on the line and you are have a tough time reeling it in, your charter mates will back you up.

FYI: Coho & Chinook migrate back down in September. Since they have a 3 year life cycle (spawning), salmon have the lowest mercury levels of the Lake Michigan. (From bioaccumulation of mercury in the food chain, eating smaller fish which are also bioaccumulating mercury.) Lake Trout and Steelhead trout (caught year-round) have higher levels since they don’t die after spawning and return to the lake. They can live 6-7 year. Plus the lake is warmer & there are fewer rainy days in September.
