Let's Go Camping: Shade / Turkey Run State Park

Let's Go Camping:  Shade State Park

This is going to be a great long weekend.  We will be hiking at Turkey Run SP, Shades SP, and Pine Hill Nature Preserve.  We are also planning on canoeing Sugar Creek.  I will be there Wednesday Night thru Sunday.  Feel free to come down any day you like.

We will be staying in individual sites at Shades State Park.  You will need to book your own site.  The cost is about $15 per night.  You can have 6 people, 2 tents, and 1 car.  There is a parking lot at the entrance to the campground for extra cars.  If you are looking for a site mate or a ride, please post it in your RSVP. There is an entrance fee for $7 per car per visit.  Therefore you will only need to pay this once.  It is also honored at Turkey Run State Park.I will be staying at Campsite 32.  This campground will probably fill up.  So booked you site early.

Reserve your site at:  http://indianastateparks.reserveamerica.com/camping/Shades/r/campsiteSearch.do?site=all&type=9&minimal=no&search=site&criteria=new&contractCode=IN&parkId=570030&search=site

We will be hiking Shades and Pine Hills. Shades State Park and Pine Hills Nature Preserve are great places to hike. The beautiful sandstone cliffs overlooking Sugar Creek and numerous shady ravines provide the backdrop for your journey through this nature lover's paradise. Some of the trails are considered "Rugged" to "Very Rugged".  Please be prepared for stairs, ladders, etc. I am planning to hike around 7 miles.

Friday and Saturday Evenings, we will have a potluck at a Dell Shelter at Shades State Park. Please bring a dish to pass.

Saturday, July 13:

We will be hiking Turkey Run. Turkey Run State Park is one of my favorite places to hike. Deep canyons nestled in the shadows of sandstone cliffs and peaceful hemlock groves harbor some of the most ruggedly beautiful hiking trails in the state. Some of the trails are considered "Rugged" to "Very Rugged".  Please be prepared for stairs, ladders, etc. I am planning to hike around 8 miles.

Friday and Saturday Evenings, we will have a potluck at a Dell Shelter at Shades State Park. Please bring a dish to pass.

So, pack your picnic lunch and come float down beautiful Sugar Creek! We will be doing a 15 mile canoe trip from Shades State Park to Turkey Run State Park. Another great pick from Kevin! The boys and I had a great time and enjoyed Shades State Park campground, good company and the nice people whom Kevin attracts to his Camp-outs. Loved beautiful Turkey Run SP! Enjoyed the weekend, only wish we could have joined the group earlier in the week! Thanks again to hosts Kevin and Debbie...(and also for the brats and burgers :

For Canoe/Kayak Renters: You need to make your own reservations. Reserve online (5 or more days in advance) at http://www.sugarvalleycanoes.com/reservations-survey.html or call (800) 422-6638. You want the 10:00 am (July 14th) 15 mile Shades to Turkey Run Trip. The cost is $26 per canoe and $18 per kayak. They take Visa and Mastercard. If you are camping down there, I would just stop over Saturday and make reservations.
