Let's Go Camping: Mississippi Palisades State Park

I haven't been the Mississippi Palisades in 35 years. This will be a great weekend. This will be individual sites trip. We will be having a potluck on Saturday Night. Please bring a dish to pass. You are on your own the rest of the meals. You can stop over to my site for pancakes and oatmeal in the morning breakfast.

Tentative Schedule:

Friday Night: Setup up camp. Hang around the campfire.

Saturday Morning: Hike the South and North Trails of the Park.

Saturday Afternoon: Free time (maybe canoe\kayak the Mississippi River?)

Saturday Night: Potluck and hang around the campfire (maybe a evening hike).

Sunday: Break camp. Galena?? Are people interested in visiting Galena on the way home Sunday? It is 30 miles away (out of the way).

Camping:

There are 240 sites there but only 45 that you can reserve ahead of time. The rest are walk-up. I am going to wait and pick out a site when I get there. I am thinking about sites around 110 – 114. So far only 2 sited have be reserved for this weekend. The campground has not been sold out since 2005. There are showers and flusher toilets in the campgrounds.

To make reservations, go to: http://www.reserveamerica.com

Camping Fee per night: Electric Sites: $20, Non-Electric Sites: $10.

About:

Palisades is the word used to describe a line of lofty, steep cliffs usually seen along a river, and Mississippi Palisades State Park, just 7 miles North on Illinois Route 84 lives up to its name. Years of erosion has carved intriguing rock formations, including Indian Head and Twin Sisters, a pair of humanoid figures on the bluff tops. The U.S. Interior Department recognized the remarkable nature of this area and in 1973 it designated acreage here as a national landmark. Wooded ravines, whose brilliant hues splash the cliffs with color each autumn, dissect the ingratiated terrain. Ferns cover the deep ravines, while in the park's northern region, leaves of the white birch ripple in the wind. Each spring and summer the valleys and slopes are covered with the blooms of trillium, bluebell, lobelia, shooting star and yellow ladies' slipper. Animal life, within the park and the river areas immediately adjoining it, is varied. Waterfowl and shorebirds are numerous, as are wild turkeys. Striking pleated woodpeckers make their home in the park, and depending on ice conditions, eagles feed at the river in January and February.

Miller's Landing, on the west side of highway 84, has a boat launch and good access for canoeists interested in exploring the Mississippi backwaters. In nearby Savanna you'll find the Great River Bike trail (running to Fulton and the Quad Cities) and the gateway to the Savanna District of the Upper Mississippi National Wildlife and Fish Refuge. Savanna is also a popular stop over for "Iron Horse" rallies.

I hope you can make it,

Kevin

What kind of stuff are we thinking about for the potluck? Can I bring fruit and make a fruit salad? What about a main course? IS anyone thinking about grilling? Brats, hot dogs and burgers? Is a bottle of wine fair game as a pass around item?
I can bring charcoal if we'll need it.
