The Second Annual George Parke Memorial Progressive Euchre Tournament

The Second Annual George Parke Memorial Progressive Euchre Tournament

Photo (C) Steven Gross

To honor the memory of George Parke, we will be hosting a charitable Progressive Euchre Tournament (again!) to benefit the American Cancer Society. Your entry fee will go towards cancer research to help find a cure.

Donation: $25 entry fee to help benefit the American Cancer Society (we are asking for prepayment this year...an email has been sent with the information on how to do so. If you don't have this email, you may email Jason)
Where: Rockwood Place; 3466 N. Clark St, Chicago, IL (specials will be announced later)
When: Sunday, April 13th at 11:00am (we would like to start playing by Noon AT THE LATEST...so, please, show up early to register.)

George was a man that would partner with anyone. Sure, he had the winning spirit like all of us do, but he was always out for the fun and enjoyment of the game. So, in the spirit of George's philosophy toward the game, this will be a totally random Progressive Euchre Tournament. When you show up, you will draw a number out of a hat and that will be your number for the day. There will be a schedule of 8 rounds. Find your number at the tables, follow the schedule, and have fun!!

We will be limiting this event to 48 people (if the demand for more is there, we will try to open it up past 48). We will be running two groups of 24 (or, if it goes past 48, we'll adjust). This makes the numbers easier to work with. No matter which group you are in, the winners will be determined by collecting all 48 players' scores.

The person who has the highest score from the day wins! Look who won last year!!

We will also be holding a 50/50 raffle. If you are not familiar with what a 50/50 raffle is, it's quite simple. We will be selling raffle tickets for $1 each. At the end of the event, we will be drawing one raffle ticket. 50% of the money goes to the winner; 50% goes to the American Cancer Society. There is no limit on the number of tickets you may buy!! Last year, Dan Parker was generous and donated his $145 winnings to the American Cancer Society. That's awesome!!!

There will also be a raffle for other donated prizes. Net proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society. So far, donations include:

*2 art sessions - donated by Arts n Spirits

*1 iPod nano donated by Chad Phillips

*1 bottle of 2010 Chasing Harvest Pinot Noir donated by Jason Wright

*2 Godiva gift baskets donated by Renata Grzeskowiak

*$25 iTunes gift card donated by Buzz

*$15 iTunes gift card donated by Yamuna

*One night stay at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel & Towers (donated by Buzz)

*Monte Carlo ceiling fan donated by Generation Brands (Jason Wright)

*2008 Cubs Derrek Lee bobblehead donated by Yamuna

*2 Cubs pen and keychain sets donated by Yamuna

*David's Tea gift package donated by Leslie Nicholas

*$25 Restaurant.com gc for Four Farthings donated by Yamuna

*Set of Rocks glasses donated by Yamuna

*1 Chocolate gift basket donated by Jean Anderson

*3 $25 Rockwood Place gc's donated by Rockwood Place

*3 $25 Bar Celona gc's donated by Rockwood Place

...and various other surprises!!!

Please RSVP via the Chicago Euchre Club Meetup website. If you are not a member of Meetup, please respond to Jason ([masked]) to reserve your spot. Disclaimer: Those who RSVP through the Meetup site will be granted spots first. If you reply via email, we will hold you to the RSVP guidelines of the Meetup group (basically, if you say you are coming, we expect you to come. If you can't, let us know ASAP and we will open the spot up. No shows on the day of the event will NOT be tolerated). If you email us, we will reduce the meetup RSVP to reflect your commitment to coming.

We are looking forward to the tournament!!

Thank you,

Buzz, Jason, Jody, and Yamuna

"George Parke, to many, Grandpa George or simply GG died peacefully in his home surrounded by his family, March 8, 2013. Honorable man, proud Grandfather, loving Dad, awesome father-in-law, great neighbor and a friend to many." (http://www.georgeparke.com/)

About Progressive Euchre:

* First, it is best that you have some prior experience playing euchre. While we always play for fun, we are slightly competitive just to keep it interesting. This event is not for someone who is "just learning the game".

* Second, the basic (Hoyle) rules of Euchre are applied. "Stick the dealer" is in; other variations (e.g. "ace-no-face," "farmer's hand" etc.) are out. The first dealer at each table is determined by someone taking the cards, shuffling, offering a cut, and then flipping up the cards one at a time to each player in order until the first black jack is flipped up. That person gets the honor of the first deal.

* Third, the standard format is slightly varied. We play progressive euchre -- each player is partnered up with a different player each round -- over the course of the night. Each round, everyone deals twice (8 deals total), then follows their schedule to the next round. Lather, rinse, and repeat for the 8 rounds. At the end of the night, everybody adds up the number of points they've scored. It goes pretty fast, so please stay until all rounds have been completed.

* Fourth, you may score more than 10 points in a round. This style of play is based on number of deals (8 for each round), not games to 10. The winners are the people with the most points. So, it behooves you to score a lot and score often!

Thanks Jason, Yamuna, Buzz and Jody for continuing to organize this terrific event, and to Rockwood for giving us the space to hold the tournament. Had a blast this year, and can wait for next year. Congrats to Dev for the win, and to everyone who won in the raffles!

Thank you everyone--I had so much fun! A big shout out to the organizers who kept everything running smoothly despite the no-shows. I never met George, but everyone there commented on what a great guy he was and I was glad we could play some cards and raise some money for a good cause in his honor! Thanks again!~

I'm so sorry to cancel at the last minute. I am not feeling well but was still going to try to come. I prepaid and would like the entire $25 to be a contribution to the charity.

Eric Bohms is my +1. I'll send him info on how to prepay for the event.

I had sent an email about a week ago about paying the entry fee before the event. We have received payments from 12 participants, so far. By pre-paying, this guarantees your spot and makes the day of the tournament easier to get started. Look for an update email for what new donations have come in for raffle prizes!!
