WHAT: Peaceful protest/demonstration to call on Obama to deny the permit for the Keystone XL Pipeline from Canada and to halt the expansion of dirty tar sands oil imports. Obama is expected at a fundraiser for Alexi Giannoulias, and we plan to be outside the event in force to make our voices heard to stop the Keystone Pipeline, to stop dumping dirty tar sands oil into Lake Michigan, and to demand a clean energy vision and future.

WHY?
On the heels of the greatest oil spill in U.S. history, closely followed by the Michigan oil spill of almost a million gallons, our government is currently considering a $7-billion dollar investment to expand our reliance on the dirtiest source of transportation fuel available --- tar sands oil from Alberta, Canada.

The proposed Keystone Pipeline would roughly double the quantity of tar sands imported into the U.S. and has been strongly challenged by Henry Waxman, chair of the House Energy and Commerce committee.

Tar sands oil emits roughly 3 times the greenhouse gas emissions of conventional oil in production alone. The tar sands industry is also devastating local populations, including many poor and indigenous communities, by destroying the environment and water supplies.

How many more oil spills will it take before we move to a clean energy future? Issuing a permit for the Keystone XL would be an investment in a dirty energy future that we don't need and can't afford. Tell Obama to block the Keystone Pipeline.
