Let's Take a Hike: Turkey Run State Park

Pictures from last years hike.

We will be hiking Turkey Run. Turkey Run State Park is one of my favorite places to hike. Deep canyons nestled in the shadows of sandstone cliffs and peaceful hemlock groves harbor some of the most ruggedly beautiful hiking trails in the state. Some of the trails are considered "Rugged" to "Very Rugged".  Please be prepared for stairs, ladders, etc. I am planning to hike around 8 miles.

We will meet at 10:15 (Eastern Time) at the Nature Center Parking lot. We will leave for the hike at 10:30 sharp.  We will be doing about a 3 hour hike.  The exact route is yet to be determined.  We will be doing trail 3.

Friday and Saturday Evenings we will have a potluck at a Dell Shelter at Shades State Park. Please bring a dish to pass.

Turkey Run is a 3-hour drive from Chicago.

We are planning a long weekend at Shades/Turkey Run State Parks in Indiana. This is a great area to spend a long weekend. We will be camping, hiking, biking, and canoeing. We will be camping at Shades from Wednesday, July 10 thru Sunday, July 14. You can come for the whole time, a couple of days, or just do a day trip. Shades/Turkey Run is about a 3-hour drive from Chicago.

Thursday, July 11:

We will be bike riding from Rockville to Bridgeton: This is a 20 mile bike ride. It will out and back from Rockville to Bridgeton. On the way we will visit 4 historic covered bridges. We will be traveling at “Sight Seeing” pace. At Bridgeton, we will stop for lunch and ice cream. I am hoping to get done in 4 hours. (If you want a longer ride, you will have the option of doing a 35-mile loop.)

Friday, July 12:

We will be hiking Shades and Pine Hills. Shades State Park and Pine Hills Nature Preserve are great places to hike. The beautiful sandstone cliffs overlooking Sugar Creek and numerous shady ravines provide the backdrop for your journey through this nature lover's paradise. Some of the trails are considered "Rugged" to "Very Rugged".  Please be prepared for stairs, ladders, etc. I am planning to hike around 7 miles.

Friday and Saturday Evenings we will have a potluck at a Dell Shelter at Shades State Park. Please bring a dish to pass.

We will be canoeing from Shades State Park to Turkey Run State Park on Sugar Creek. Come paddle through Turkey Run and Shades State Parks and under 3 historic covered bridges. Stop along the many sandbars and hunt for rocks, fossils, crinoids and Indian Beads. Paddle down the stream the Piankeshaw Indians called "Pun-go-se-co-ne" or "Water of Many Sugar Trees". So, pack your picnic lunch and come float down beautiful Sugar Creek! We will be doing a 15 mile canoe trip from Shades State Park to Turkey Run State Park. Cost: $15 per person (2 people per canoe) RSVP by: June 28.

Carpooling: Please post if you can offer a ride or need a ride in your RSVP.

Information about camping.

http://www.meetup.com/ChicagoCampers/events/102210552/

We will be staying in individual sites at Shades State ParkYou will need to book your own site. The cost is about $15 per night per site.  You can have up to 6 people, 2 tents, and 1 car.  There are showers and flush toilets but no electricity. There is a parking lot at the entrance to the campground for extra cars.  If you are looking for a site mate or a ride, please post it in your RSVP. There is an entrance fee for $7 per car per visit.  Therefore you will only need to pay this once.  It is also honored at Turkey Run State Park. Thank you to everyone who helped get me off the trail and to the shuttle so I could get to the hospital. I couldn't have gotten out without your help. Special thanks to Chris Laz, Debbie J, and her daughter Nadia for doing so much for me so I could elevate and ice as this allowed me to go canoeing today. Also thanks to Tim for use of your air mattress... So much pain so at least I was able to be comfortable after getting down into the tent! And especially to my honey Dave for everything and his son Cory as they allowed me to somewhat enjoy the rest of the weekend at least especially after giving up the rest of the hike to take me to the hospital. You are all the best!

Dave & I will be coming on Saturday to hike, then pitch a tent and canoe on Sunday. Before we reserve a camp site, we wondered if anyone has room for us to throw a tent on their already booked site? Please let me know or else we will try to grab campsite 34 which was still available. Text my phone soon please - 708.341.7474. Thanks.

I would also love to go if I can find carpool peer for Saturday hike only. I am in Palatine/Hoffman Ests/Barrington area. This is a 3.5 hour drive one-way trip from where I am.

I do not know where we should meet to leave cars behind. I am thinking may be Streets of Woodfield mall in Schaumburg but I am not sure if we could park there for whole day. We should meet and leave at 6:30 AM if we want to be there by 10:15 AM (estimate time based on the Google map). Rick is not responding but he would go along with us, I think. It doesn’t make much sense to drive the distance alone and back for one day trip. Marcy from Arlington Hts may join in. I called her and left a message. I am looking forward to meeting you all Saturday. It should be a fun trip.

Just know that suspension bridge is closed so you can't access north trails except by taking shuttle at nature center to covered bridge or by hiking trail 1, 2 to covered bridge. North trails are more rugged and might be quite muddy due to recent rain. Wear good hiking shoes.
