We will be hiking Shades and Pine Hills. Shades State Park and Pine Hills Nature Preserve are great places to hike. The beautiful sandstone cliffs overlooking Sugar Creek and numerous shady ravines provide the backdrop for your journey through this nature lover's paradise. Some of the trails are considered "Rugged" to "Very Rugged".  Please be prepared for stairs, ladders, etc. I am planning to hike around 7 miles.

We will meet at Dell Picnic Shelter at 10:15 am (Eastern Time) and start the hike at 10:30 sharp.

We are planning a long weekend at Shades/Turkey Run State Parks in Indiana. This is a great area to spend a long weekend. We will be camping, hiking, biking, and canoeing. We will be camping at Shades from Wednesday, July 10 thru Sunday, July 14. You can come for the whole time, a couple of days, or just do a day trip. Shades/Turkey Run is about a 3 hour drive from Chicago.  Here is the schedule for the rest of the week.

We will be traveling at “Sight Seeing” pace. At Bridgeton, we will stop for lunch and ice cream. I am hoping to get done in 4 hours. Saturday, July 13:

We will be hiking Turkey Run. Turkey Run State Park is one of my favorite places to hike. Deep canyons nestled in the shadows of sandstone cliffs and peaceful hemlock groves harbor some of the most ruggedly beautiful hiking trails in the state. Some of the trails are considered "Rugged" to "Very Rugged".  Please be prepared for stairs, ladders, etc. I am planning to hike around 8 miles.

Friday and Saturday Evenings, we will have a potluck at a Dell Shelter at Shades State Park. Please bring a dish to pass.

The cost is about $15 per night per site.  You can have up to 6 people, 2 tents, and 1 car.  There are showers and flush toilets but no electricity. There is a parking lot at the entrance to the campground for extra cars.  If you are looking for a site mate or a ride, please post it in your RSVP. There is an entrance fee for $7 per car per visit.  Therefore you will only need to pay this once.  It is also honored at Turkey Run State Park. It was inspiring. I had started running around Memorial Day because I knew I was a bit out of shape but now I'm taking my training to a whole new level after that hike! My calves are so strong today. It's like I can leap up the stairs at work!

I plan to bring my canoe for the Sunday outing. How many hours do you estimate it takes to paddle the 15 miles from Shades to Turkey Run? I will also need a ride one way or the other between my car and my canoe.

    • Kevin

I normally paddle about 3 mph with no current. It should be 5 hours or less depending on the current.
