Get Your Butt into Shape for X-Country Skiing

Johnson’s Mound Forest Preserve (west of Batavia) is a great place to get your legs into shape for x-country skiing. It is a wooded glacial kame rising 50+ ft. over the surrounding countryside. The drive looping around the mound is wide, paved, and is shared by Fox Valley hikers and cyclists getting into and staying in shape. Base to base the west part of the drive is 0.3 mi. There is drinking water and an outhouse at the top of the hill. There is occasional vehicle traffic moving 5 to 10 mph on the drive.

If anyone wants to join me I usually do 2 hrs of up & down, base to base walking/jogging (OK not much jogging) on the west part of the drive Saturday & Sunday mornings. While I am training on the mound now, I am not on a regular schedule. I’ll get back on to my regular weekend schedule October 26 and continue to x-country skiing season.  If you see a red Jeep Commander in the parking lot, I'm on the mound.

It’s also a great place to toboggan and tube when we have snow.

Anyone can come, it isn't restricted by the sign-up list. I won't "officially" schedule more meet-ups here for the calendar . However, I'll be on my regular weekend schedule of Saturday & Sunday mornings here on Johnson's Mound from 9 am to 11 am, and continue to my x-country skiing outings start on Jan 4. If you see a red Jeep Commander in the parking lot, I'm on the west part of the drive looping around the hill. Feel free to join me any time. If you have a bike, bring it. If you have a dog bring it. Its just a work out at your own pace.

Ray, Have the Organizers considered a 1-strike and you are out rule unless: you change your RSVP to NO even a minute before the event starts; communicate with the organizer; have a clear reason why you didn't change your RSVP (got a flat tire on my way) or a very contrite "sorry, sorry, sorry, won't do it again." The point isn't to penalize people but to remove those that blindly RSVP YES and then never attend. If someone changes their ways, OK to rejoin. I've been on hikes where 50% were no-shows! While inflated attendance may not be a deterrence for large parties, for outdoor activities I worry about parking and just being on a hike with, say, 50 people. (BTW, I have a conflict Sat in any event).

I'm too laid back to police attendance. Since I don't provide anything beyond my company on these type of activities, it doesn't bother me. I just take it in stride. 1-strike and you are out rule would need to be set up by Kevin who is the web site owner for this group. Other meet-up groups have that type of rule. The event organizers for this group just take it in stride and aren't surprised when half the people don't show. Many use sign-ups as a tickler on their calendar. When organizers have to put down deposits, then we get tough and require payment up front through Paypal to get on the sign-up list.

This sounds awesome! However, is it possible for me to get a ride with someone? I live in the Pilsen neighborhood in Chicago and don't have a car. I'd love to join, though! :)

Check out Jan 4. I have a "beginners" outing scheduled at Grand Geneva Resort in Lake Geneva. It’s about 2 hrs from Chicago. Particulars for the outing are:
      • X-country ski rental are $12/day
      • X-country skiing trail pass is $6.
      • No set times, they offer them based on requests I suggested 9 am (time of meet-up) or 10 am. (Car poolers can set up their own time as needed.)
      • Advanced X-country ski lessons, or just beginner lessons? Beginner lessons for the most part but they do have a few instructors for more advanced individuals.
      • They have 2 certified Nordic instructors.
      • Any X-country skiing/Resort packages? There are downhill packages, but cross country is not included.
      • You can dial[masked] now and they can answer questions. Reservations for the ski school are accepted two weeks prior to the lesson. (You will make your own reservation - we can coordinate the time.)

I need to travel out of town the weekend of Oct 26. So I won't be there that weekend. You won't need a guide. The hill & drive and is well marked (map at parking lot) for for anyone who wants to check it out Saturday Oct 26.

Great! Thank you, Ray :) And in case I do not get to see you prior to your foot surgery, I am wishing you a very uneventful recovery.

There isn’t a wait list. If you want to come out, just show up. There is usually more than enough parking. I put a limit on attendance to stop people who have no interest in hiking from “advertising their wares” on my activity. Usually ½ the people that sign up don’t bother to show anyway.

Sounds like a great workout! I hope to join you...

It's a little too far for me to get there for a 2 hour run/hike. I'll let you know if I change my mind. Sounds like a good workout though.
