We are a diverse group of Israelis and Americans who practice their Hebrew language skills and experience Israeli culture together. Our members have a wide range of Hebrew proficiency levels, from beginners, through intermediate speakers to advanced, native, and professional users of Hebrew!
The Chicago Hebrew Meetup was founded by Margalit in 2006, is about 370 members strong, experiences a steady growth since February 2010, and is second only to NY. Most of our members live in Chicagoland, others travel all the way from Milwaukee and Eau Claire, WI, and from Fort Wayne, IN to attend!
Meetings are usually on Sunday afternoon or on any evening, with an average of about 15 participants per meeting. Usually we celebrate 4 holidays together: Chanuka, Pesach, Yom HaAtzmaut, and Tu BeAv. Thanks to our wonderful sponsors (see column on the left) we do not charge for membership or per meeting. We have held 115 diverse meetings, including in coffee houses, restaurants, pubs, private homes, and the great outdoors!
As in other language groups, much of our meetings are conducted in the language of focus. In order to get the most out of belonging to the group, members should be able to put at least some coherent sentences together in Modern Israeli Hebrew. Many members speak better and fluent Hebrew, but you should be able to find members who speak at your level. You can also listen to others conversing. Local resources for upgrading your level of Hebrew include classes at the JCC Hebrew Ulpan, online classes, and private tutoring, for example by Ravinia Tutors.
This is a closed group so for updates on activities you need to sign up, providing members with lots of privacy. We do welcome new members! Whether you are a native speaker, a beginner, or anything in between, please send a request to join. All ages are welcome and already participate! We look forward to meetup with you soon!!!
