2013 JAZZ CLUB TOUR (Pub Crawl)

CHICAGO JAZZ FESTIVAL SEASON IS HERE ONCE AGAIN... Come out for the Jazz Institute of Chicago's Annual Jazz Club Tour Wednesday August 28, 2013. The JAZZ CLUB TOUR kicks off the Chicago Jazz Festival festivities by giving visitors and hometown folks an opportunity to sample a wide range of music and venues before the free festival feast to come. Starting at just $25 ($20 for JIC Members), patrons can purchase a Jazz Club Tour button providing access to all participating clubs as well as trolley transportation between the clubs.   Tickets are available at any of the Tour venues  (see below).

You can start the tour at any of the venues BUT the Meetup will begin at Andy's Jazz Club, 11 E. Hubbard.  Andy's has food available and is just north of the Loop so it should be convenient for most folks.  The trolleys don't begin until 7:00pm but you can listen to straight ahead jazz at Andy's until the busses start.  I will be outside Andy's starting at 5:45pm.  From Andy's we will get a consensus as to which route (North, South, Central) the group would like to take. Depending on the interests of the members we may have to split our group.  See the trolley map HERE to see the various routes.   Hopefully you will see some clubs that you might not ordinarily visit.

If possible please join us at Andy's instead of starting at another venue.  If you start somewhere else, text me at[masked], and I will let you know where we are.

The Tour is over at midnight but of course you can drop off at anytime you need to do so.

Here's a list of the venues, the names of the artists can be found here:

Andy’s 11 E. Hubbard St.
Jazz Showcase 806 S. Plymouth Ct.
Close Up 2 416 S. Clark St.
Reggie's 2109 S. State St.

So disorganized each year it seems to be getting worse

I agree that the organization is sorely lacking; however the music is still awesome!!! I had a ball despite minor frustrations!!

Jazz Showcase and Ira Sullivan were excellent as expected; love that venue. M Lounge is nice but WAY too small for this crawl thing. Enjoyed Taylor Moore as expected, but my big surprise was Ernest Dawkins and Norman's Bistro - AWESOME playing! And great location. Almost got stranded because we refused to leave! Brava to Dale, the volunteer who got on the radio and made sure we got ONE MORE trolley at 11:55 back to Marmon. Wonderful time as usual, and can't wait to do it again. Thanks for all your efforts, Pierre! Cheers!!

Hi All, this is always a FUN event. My caution is don't try to fit too many clubs in or you won't enjoy the evening. Also, be aware of what clubs offer food, as you don't want to get hungry as the evening draws on, and find yourself at a club with no food. :-( I'm volunteering for the Jazz Institute for this event so I'm not able to join you all, but if you make it to the Jazz Showcase later in the evening, that is where I'll be volunteering. BTW the Jazz Showcase is a MUST, to catch the GREAT Ira Sullivan. :-)

Enjoy the tour everyone and I hope to meet some of you "Jazz Cats" at the Showcase.

Eilene, the Jazz Sowcase is at 806 S. Plymouth Ct., (old Dearborn Station) and you'd volunteer through the Jazz Institute of Chicago, however at this point in time it may be too late because they had a training session on Aug. 17. But it's worth connecting with them if you're interested.

Thanks Pierre, I hope to get to meet you this evening if you're plans are to be at the Jazz Showcase after 8:30 pm.

I will also be on the tour but I noticed from the Jazzinchicago.org site that the Green Mill up north was on the list but I don't see it on yours. thanks

    August 22, 2013

    • Eilened

So is the Green Mill on it or not??? Would be the easiest place for me to get to as a start!!

      August 26, 2013

    • Pierre

Eilene, I don't believe Green Mill is on the tour. You can call them to confirm.

      August 26, 2013

  • Eilened

Driving in from NW burbs so if Green Mill on tour, would be a great starting point...anyone else from up north interested in carpooling?

    August 26, 2013

  • Karla J

Hi Karla: would also be my first meet with this group....coming from NW burbs, would be great to have a carpool...anyone else??

      August 26, 2013

  • MarySusan

Do the trolleys run in a continuous circle? Confused about how to get back to where I parked my car. And can you buy your button that night?

    August 21, 2013

    • MarySusan

Thanks Pierre ! See you on the 28th!

      August 21, 2013

    • Eilened

Mary Susan: buttons are $25 purchased before day of event and $35 day of.....because many people purchase day of -or pick up day of- tour starts at 6 wherever you're beginning but trolleys don't start running until 7.

A y dress code for any of clubs.

    August 26, 2013

    • Eilened

No....casual works best since you're in a variety of venues and on and off the trolley. BE comfortable!!!
