Tawas 2013 Part II!!!

Those who made the trek with us in July have seen the Tawas magic 1st hand! 11 of us all together with plastered smiles... 3 of those 11 took advantage of lessons and have come back accomplished kiters! The best thing is that while we were away from home, there wasn't much wind to speak of back here but we had 2 full days of magic up there!

For those uninitiated... Tawas Point, in East Tawas MI, is located on Lake Huron and about a 6 hour drive from Chi. It is the perfect spot for learning and any level of riding. The launches are on either side of the point... wind direction determines which side we are on. One side is a very large flat water bay with shallow waters. The other side is known as the "Lake side" but it differs from most Lake Michigan launches in that there are less pummeling waves, is shallow further out from shore and even though when staring out over the lake you're looking at Canada, is surprisingly a bit warmer than our Chi waters at times because of how shallow it is! Since we can kite on both sides of the point, this spot works in every wind direction! Now for the real magic... besides the great companionship that always gather on these trips... Tawas is great for thermal action! Many times you can ignore the wind forecast... usually all we need are warm, sunny conditions with a Southerly flow and like magic, we have wind!! But we've had it good on some Northern directions too. Many times we've made this trek and there was NO wind around Chicago and the 15-20 of us there were cruising the Huron waters with perm-a-grins!!

I have managed to procure 1 campsite in the State Park, right off the launch, as well as some cabin accommodations. As before, there are lessons available;

2 Day Lesson: $499
1 Day Lesson: $299
Hourly Lessons: $85/hr

If you are brand new, without experience, or perhaps have had some kite experience but have never ridden or have not had a ground lesson and learned safety, etc, I highly recommend the 2 day lesson. Book at least a 2 day and conditions line up like they should, very good chance you'll come off this trip a-riding!! Even if you do have some experience or are even already riding, a 2 day lesson can take you well beyond the level you are now. In order to secure your time, full payment needs to be sent. Please contact me via message for payment options. Of course refunds or partial refunds can be given if conditions just don't work but that is rare. When just starting out, there is a certain amount of ground school, safety, getting comfortable with the kite and even body dragging that must be done and require little to no wind.

With lessons, kite, board, harness & float vest are included while your doing your lesson. You will need to purchase a wetsuit if you don't have one. Even though it's summer time, the water is still chilly, especially when you will be spending a lot of time in it. There are no refunds if you can't continue because you're too cold so PLEASE contact me RIGHT AWAY for any personal gear. I have some deals. If you don't have any kite gear, you won't have any gear to practice on while not doing a lesson. For those without gear, this is another reason the 2 day lesson is the best idea.

Ultimately, if you have already caught the stoke... you WILL if you haven't yet, once you get a taste ;)... and know you will be in the market for gear, it would be nice if you had gear so you can fill your weekend with lesson AND practice time. This place we are traveling to is very beginner friendly... much easier than Lake MI... so the more time you can spend honing your chops there, the easier it will be when you come back here. If you are interested in kite gear, I have some great quality stuff and even a few deals on lightly used gear, only a season - 2 seasons old. I am glad to discuss what would be the best gear for YOU. When buying your 1st kite quiver, it definitely pays to know what you're buying and/or talk to someone who can advise you properly. This goes a LONG way in how well you ride, how safely, how quickly you pick it up and can GREATLY minimize frustration with learning.... and eliminate frustration from buying the wrong stuff!

Hopefully those who couldn't fit this trip in their schedule last time can make it happen this time. If you are thinking about or planning a lesson, I really need to hear from you right away so we can make certain you have a spot as well as accommodations... what I have secured is limited.

So let's see a show of hands!!

A few days and counting and we're off to see the wizard!! We have 17 people joining us this round... gonna be a sweet time! If you want lessons and haven't locked them in yet, please do so right away. You are not scheduled until you have sent payment and spots are about full. It will also help me out to get the schedule finished.

Looking forward to having everyone who can, join us at The Kirby House in Grand Haven on the way home Sunday for some outta this world wood fired oven fare! Always a good way to celebrate on the way down the Lake Michigan coast. And who knows, if we're short on wind in Tawas Sunday, we've caught it good in Muskegon on the way home. This kind of stuff makes this even more of an adventure!!

Hey Michael could I get another camp site with my wife and little son? Are there any hotels close by? I'd love to come out sat/Sunday. Will have to confirm with my wife but we would both love to get out on the water. I'm intermediate (level III certified), she's beginner (level II).

And the forecast today was for 11mph yet it's blazing up there right now!! Of course we're always taking a chance with the wind but one of the reasons we go is for the Tawas magic. A forecast for a week down the road isn't necessarily something to rely on either but we seek the thermals over the bay which usually aren't in figured in to the East Tawas forecast models anyway. The setup we like to see for thermals is a Southerly flow and warm, sunny weather. Last months trip, there was not much wind forecasted. We got a good SW all day the Fri for the bay and then again Sat morn until it switched SE in the afternoon when we made our way across the point to the lake side. Of course I have yet to swoon Mom nature over drinks, convincing her to give me the inside scoop but we were 2 for 3 last month with similar results every trip over the last 4 summers.

But in the end, we're all gambling with the wind. If you're interested in increasing your odds, I have some deals on larger, very good and lightly used demo kites right now.

Alright... great response for this trip! We've got 13 all together so far... from meetup as well as other channels I host through. Luckily I was able to procure another cabin and literally snatch another campsite!! A spot in the air conditioned cabin is $160 for the entire stay and on the campsite, $75. The cabin is on the bay with a nice, sandy chill beach and is about 3 miles from the launch. The campsite is a very nice state park with abundant and clean shower & bathroom facilities and is right next to the launch sites!

I'm already filling the extra campsite and cabin but have some spots left so not too late if you act right away. There are also spaces left for lessons as well.

Great opportunity to finally learn this sport for all you who have been wanting to! We had 3 new beginners last time and all 3 came back riding!... something that is a lot more difficult to achieve on our big bad lake around here. 2 of those new riders are locked in for this trip and will be honing their new skills! Excellent company on these trips as well! Come enjoy the experiences with us!!

  • Chatch I.

I will probably do the 2 day lessons. Is there spot for me to pitch a tent?

    August 3, 2013

    • Michael

Chatch!! Will be good to have you! Still room for lesson if you lock in right away. I think the campsite might be full but let me check. I do have 1 bed left in the cabin if interested. I will send you an email.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
