ChicagoRuby: Elmhurst - How Do I Build... ?

The "How Do I Build...?" format is somewhere between a hack night and a presentation.

The key question: "How do I build [X] in Ruby or Rails?" We might talk about the best shopping cart or calendar or whatever for Rails. We might talk about the best way to do database maintenance with Ruby, or the best tools for organizing Ruby or Rails development.

Every ChicagoRuby member is invited to drive. Let the group know what you want to do, what you've tried, and what would be interesting to you. Let's put our heads together and create!

Lunch After the Meeting
After most meetings, we go to lunch at the Elmhurst Restaurant, roughly two blocks NW of the meeting venue. Address: 441 West Lake Street, Elmhurst, IL 60126. Join us!

    Sterling,

It was attached to my computer. I can meet you somewhere and give it back to you. I live by Midway Airport, about 95th and Cicero. I can mail it too.

No problem Marty. Can you bring it to the next Meetup? Thanx!

Great meeting with about 10 people. The meetup room has new furniture with new tables for everyone to sit with. The meeting started out with Sterling talking about online resources and the many rails tutorials out there. Pros and Cons of Peepconde, Code Academy, Rails Zombies Micheal Hartl's etc. He also had a cool cube speaker for the demo. Doug and Marty were talking about the (free) Dave Jones Rails tutorial from Spokane Jr. College. Stu gave us some insight to the different flavors of Unix/Linux. His recursion demo will be ready next week. Aaron gave us an interesting demo of coloring and editing HTML code. Ray Hightower showed us the the new internet page for the next Chicago Ruby conf. The speakers and new venue look great. Much discussion about DHH and his latest provacative assertion that testing is dead(He still believes in testing!). We watched an internet point counter point. Interesting points on both sides. We went to lunch where we continued the geek talk.

Did anyone come across a long black audio cable after the meetup? Mine went missing. I'll see everyone next month!

Stu, sounds interesting. You'll be first up. I would like to see a real life practical example of recursion. Other than deleting all of the layered Linux Files/Directories from a parent.

Marty, you always know how to bring humor to any discussion! I look forward to seeing everybody on Saturday. ~RayH

ha that wasn't meant for production systems. It's a reverse engineered autonomously aware network protocol api suite called (RevEng on monorails): here is a prototype : http://trueslant.com/...

    Sterling,
Yes. You're in right after Stu. Looking forward to your talk. Info about learning online is always interesting and welcome.

I'd like to do a 10 talk on online learning resources on Saturday. Can you fit me into the schedule?

I'll have a quick ten minute intro on primitive recursion. Working on it now so it probably won't be a very long talk. I'll just enumerate through some code examples to bootstrap a novices finite knowledge and expand on /thinking/ recursively.

Jon Allured - If present, perhaps, you could review and explain use of decent-exposure and fabrication gems that are in your rails template. I understand the scope / security issue that decent-exposure addresses. I don't really understand what fabrication does. Designed for testing? Instead of the Faker gem? Thanks, Doug

I'm going to bring a "problem" to resolve. I can't get the rspec test to pass for "Listing 9.9: Tests for the user update action" in Michael Hartl's Rails' tutorial:
    http://www.railstutorial.org/book/updating_and_deleting_users

I've got a scope or a variable definition error. Perhaps, someone can also show me how to post to Stack Overflow.

I by-passed the test in order to continue the course / book.

    Thanks, Doug
