Buddha's Birthday Celebration: Vegetarian Feast and Burning Karma Kabaret!

Please join us for Buddha's 2557th Birthday celebration at Zen Buddhist Temple!

Many of you remember this exciting event from last year and we are doing it again!

The Vegetarian Feast takes place at 6:00 pm on Saturday, May 18 and is followed by the Burning Karma Kabaret, an evening of music and performance. On the occasion of Buddha's Birthday, Buddhists honor and celebrate the interconnectedness of all beings through promoting the peaceful and non-harming lifestyle of vegetarianism. The tickets for this fresh, gourmet, healthy dinner are $20 in advance or $25 at the door. It includes appetizers, beverage and dessert, as well as admission to the Burning Karma Kabaret. For more information please email the temple at [masked] or call (773) 528-8685.

IMPORTANT: The seats are limited and RSVP for this meetup won't guaranty your spot at the event as the attendance to the event will be on first come first serve basis. It means it can be filled at any time. However, you can reserve your seat in advance (strongly recommended) by making a payment with credit card over the phone or mailed to the temple. For more info or to pay in advance please call (773) 528-8685. Also, an effort will be made for our members to be seated together but there is no guaranty that it will be 100% possible. If you call them to pay in advance please mention that you are ChicagoVeg members so they would seat all of us who called in advance together.
While it's a vegetarian feast (the ingredients will be listed) all dishes except some of the desert will be completely vegan (and many are gluten-free)!

MENU:

  • Soba Noodle Nests
Buckwheat noodles twirled in a Thai red curry and peanut sauce with crushed peanuts, scallion and fresh lime.
  • Moroccan Carrot Salad
Thinly sliced carrots, toasted almonds, fresh dill, mint and basil with cumin vinaigrette. Gluten free.
  • Slow Roasted Cauliflower
A warm salad of roasted cauliflower seasoned with coriander, cumin, cayenne and turmeric, tossed with crispy chick peas and parsley. Gluten free.
  • Savory Green Pancakes
A savory pancake filled with chopped Swiss chard and scallions, served with a cilantro lime butter.
  • Spiced Lentils
Curry spiced lentils with caramelized onions, diced sweet potatoes and fresh spring peas.  Gluten free.
  • Miso Glazed Eggplant
Roasted Japanese eggplant brushed with a ginger miso glaze and garnished with sesame seed and scallion.
  • Stuffed Peppers
Red and yellow peppers stuffed with an Israeli couscous salad of roasted cremini mushrooms, roasted red onions and calamita olives. Gluten free.
  • Roasted Butternut Squash, Heirloom Beans and Wild Rice
Roasted large diced butternut squash with a blend of heirloom beans braised with apple cider and served over wild rice with crispy kale chips. Gluten free.
  • Root Vegetable Shepherds’ Pie
A hearty casserole of roasted carrots, parsnips and onions covered with mashed potatoes and baked. Gluten free.

In addition to these nine dishes we will have a variety of deserts and a musicale performance after that (those who attended last year had a blast)!

NOTE: We join the celebration simply to enjoy the Vegetarian Feast and the Performance. We neither suggest nor do not suggest to participate in the spiritual practices offered by the temple. We believe our members can and should make their personal choices on this matter.

Please use "Comments" area in the bottom of the event page to offer/ask rides and post any questions or comments.

While I plan to be by the entrance to the temple, no need to look for me. You can just go in as we will have designated tables where you could meet the rest of members.

I won't access to my computer to respond to any questions today so if any issues please call temple directly.

See you all at the event!

Dear Manal, Thank you for your kind offer! I think I can get there via public transportation and I am hoping to get there early to attend the Seminism and Buddhism class at 4:30pm. I would really appreciate a ride back from the event (at whatever time you want to leave) and I will pay for gas and have an extra free ticket, if you know someone who can use it. I do not know how to contact you through your profile. I sent Vadim an e-mail that maybe he can send to you with my address and contact information? Thank you again! Love, LeeLee

    Hey Guys, & Gals,
Remember to wear your good socks :-)

Just another friendly reminder that RSVP on the page doesn't guaranty you the spot at the event, for that you will need to call the temple to reserve your ticket(s). There is currently no way to predict if there are any tickets left when you will show up without the reservation.

is it possible to get a ticket just for the Kabaret?

    May 13, 2013

    • Vadim

I am not sure as the Feast is the main part of the event, but you can call temple to find out from them directly.

For those of you who have never been to this, (disclaimer I am not a Buddhist, nor member of temple, nor plan to be one).
The place & people are so very nice & welcoming, food is always GREAT, & it's well worth the $$$. -ken

Would LOVE to go, but that's the same day I'm going to Green Fest. Is Chicago Veg going to be at a table this year?

    April 29, 2013

  • Cynthia

How late will it run potentially? I won't be able to get there until 730ish.

    April 29, 2013

    • Vadim

Not sure but my guess is that dinner should be done by that time and we would be watching performance (in a different room). Please call them directly at (773)[masked] for details.
