Montrose Beach Potluck and Volleyball

This is a continuation of the very successful events from the past 5 summers.

Feel free to come either for potluck or volleyball or both!

LOCATION:  Montrose Beach on Lake Michigan (PLEASE see the map above) We will meet at a grass area south of the boathouse - located on the east side N. Simmons Drive, between Wilson and Montrose.

See the picture above or a better picture here

Look for the "ChicagoVeg" sign

Mike will be wearing a white "Doo Rag" with black trim

TIMING:

11AM / Noon - We will start our potluck (If you will not arrive till then, that is fine, but let us know when RSVP) There is no guaranty that we will not start sampling before!

about 1PM - Volleyball, frisbee, etc...

TRANSPORTATION:

Driving: There is a lot of parking by Montrose Beach, however some of the closer parking may fill up quickly, which is one of the reasons to arrive before noon :)

Public transportation: Several CTA buses stop at Montrose Beach, although it may be a bit of a walk to the picnic (<1mile). For more info: tripsweb.rtachicago.com

Bike: Riding your bike is a good option. Remember, you can usually bring bikes on Chicagoland public transportation.

WHAT WE WILL SUPPLY:

• Volleyball, net
• Aerobies (like Frisbees, but better)
• A couple of large plastic tarps
• Drinking water, ice
• Some extra paper plates, plastic cups, plastic "silverware", paper towels

WHAT TO BRING:

• A beverage to drink/dish to share - Please follow our potluck rules: Potluck Rules
• Although we will supply them, we encourage you to bring your own plates/bowl/utensils/drinking cup (to be more eco-friendly)
• The expectation to have a great time!
• Please check what other people will bring and specify what dish you plan to bring as you RSVP so all of us won't bring a potato salad!

These just keep getting better and better every time. Such wonderful company.
I'm not sure where to post the cookie recipes some were asking about, but if you e-mail or message me I'll be more than happy to send them along.
Thanks everyone for making this a really great day.

I posted the link to a page where you can post a recipe for your super delicious cookies, Stephen! In case you have not seen it, here is it again: http://www.meetup.com...

Thanks Vadim, I copied and pasted the recipes there (that's why they're all double spaced). I was too lazy to type all that in.

    1. Thank you everyone for joining us - it was a lot of fun. It would be even better if I did not sun-burned myself because volleyball was too much fun! Special thanks to Mike for all his effort to organize the event and staying to clean the site when everyone left. Next time we need to have someone help him.
    2. If any of you have photos please upload them to event page so everyone could tag their old and new friends!
    3. Please stay tuned for the announcement about our July potluck which will go out shortly!

I plan to bring a vegan tropical fruit salad. I will stop by briefly but cannot stay super long as my senior greyhound is not feeling well.

Recipe for stewed apples and raisins (recipe comes from England via my mom):
    1. Cut up applies into moderate-sized pieces (approx 1-2cm) and put in pot
    2. Sprinkle on a bit of lemon juice
    3. Add raisins and a little bit of water
    4. Cook on low heat, stirring, for about 1 hour. The heat will release water from the apples.
    5. Cool and enjoy

Hi everyone.. Just wanted everyone to know that I'm excited for this meetup on Saturday, especially playing volleyball! I'm hoping I can make it to the potluck... If I can, I will be bringing a catering dish, courtesy of Native Foods Cafe-- the Saigon Rolls.. One of my favorites.. (they're vegan, delicious and gluten free) :)

    3 · June 26, 2014

    • Vadim

Saigon Rolls are one of my favorites too! :)

Will there be World Cup watching?!?!

    1 · June 26, 2014

    • Vadim

Some people like to watch and some people like to play! ;)

      June 26, 2014

    • Michael M.

Charlie -- I'm a World Cup fan too! I will bring a radio and tune it into ESPN 1000 from 11 - 1 for anyone who want to listen to the Chile-Brazil game.

      2 · June 27, 2014

  • Mike

I will b there 1 pm... there is some good Worldcup game 11-1.:-) Anybody wanna watch it together at a nearby place?

    June 27, 2014

    • Vadim

Sorry the idea is to get together on the beach and have a potluck, but you are welcome to come later and bring some dessert! :)

      June 27, 2014

  • Kirsten

Will there be a grill? I was planning to make Millet-Beet-Walnut burger patties but I will not be able to bring a grill.

    1 · June 26, 2014

    • Kirsten

Ok. I'll bring carrot cake cup cakes.

      2 · June 26, 2014

    • Kirsten

They turned into carrot cake cookies of some sort but they taste good. See you all there. Can't wait.

      2 · June 27, 2014

  • Marielle

Unfortunately Sean is sick and can't play tomorrow. Hopefully we'll be able to go next time.

    1 · June 27, 2014

  • Christopher D.

Any beverage suggestions? Juggling two jobs right now, so not much time to cook....

    June 26, 2014

    • Vadim

Any non-alcohol 100% plant-based beverages are fine as long as they "fair value" to substitute a dish. We often have people who simply stop by at WholeFoods pick something up from their salad bar if they don't have time to cook or prefer not experiment on humans. :)
Purchased food is fine as long as you know exactly ingredients and can attach the list for others people to know.

      June 26, 2014

  • Maria

probably bringing vegan brownies and lentil/rice/nut dish.

    3 · June 26, 2014

  • Teresa

Is there a list of what people are bringing? So I can decide on what I should bring and also list it?

    June 22, 2014

    • Vadim

Teresa - We don't have a list but we encourage people to share what they are bringing in the comments on the event page so it may help others to plan what they bring. It's totally optional though.

      June 22, 2014

  • Marielle

I can't attend (will be working all day) but my husband, Sean, will be there!
