2nd-Annual Sewing Workshop and Fashion Show         Time: 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm

Luckily our January 2011 workshop was attended by 74 volunteers. Fortunately as a result of it numerous workshops snowballed in Chicagoland and Kansas. Many helpers enthusiastially enjoyed themsevles being a dressmaker with a BIG heart.

Only because of their efforts in less than 1-year 500+ dresses and 100+ pants were made and hand-delivered to Haiti. They are all proudly worn by little girls and boys aged 2 to 5 years. For many of them it is there very first dress / pants they ever owned.

Due to very popular demand we'll have another hands-on and family-style workshop for sewers and non-sewers. As in the past professional sewing facilitators will volunteer their expertise and guide all non-sewers and sewers with task such as: working with simple patterns, operating a sewing machine, cutting fabrics, ironing, folding and packing.

Naturally this event is again a family-style event. Anybody older than 4 years is WELCOMED. We will have duties assigned for every attendee. Obviously there are many tasks besides operating a sewing machine to get the job done.

As with all our Haiti-help events, the workshop is NOT a fundraiser.
The mandatory entrée fee PER person:
(5) gently-used pillowcases or
(5) gently-used T-shirts

This event if for everybody from age 4 and older and a BIG heart.
• sewing machine with loaded bobbin. (If an electric machine, kindly bring an extension cord)
• steam iron with iron board
• pair of dressmaker scissors (MUST be suitable to cut fabric)
• rotary cutter with self-healing cutting mat and ruler
• bias tape, to be 7/8" wide, single folded (any color)

Dresses will be made out of pillowcase and hand-delivered to little girls living in orphanages in Haiti. The same goes for the T-shirts, which will be converted to pants (britches) for little boys . Obviously the proud little ladies and gentlemen will be all photographed, dressed in “Made in Chicago” dresses and pants (britches).

We will have a photo display from dresses and pants made at our previous workshops. There will be also photos showing little boys and girls wearing the finished goods.

As before we expect this workshop to be very cosmopolitan again. Be ready to easily speak twelve (12) different languages with the fellow attendees.

Also bring with you a camera to take snapshots from the workshop and last not least for own enjoyment some snacks and a non-alcoholic beverage

Event highlights are:
• fellows with a BIG heart, many of them fluent in a foreign language
• members of this Meetup who visited Haiti after the earthquake
• talented sewers who are eager to share their knowledge with any novice sewer
• poster board presentations from post-earthquake Haiti travelers
• diverse sewing teams, such as: grandmother/mother/grandchild, aunt+niece, godmother+godchild, father+daughter+son, neighbor with best buddy, friend with new date, you name it . . . .

At the conclusion of the event we will have again a Fashion Show for 4 - 6 year olds, dressed up in the dresses and shorts from the workshop.
