What a great lecture! A wonderful evening even if it wasn't the best weather. Great to meet you Mary!

I agree. It was neat to listen to, and it was nice to meet you, and your dad too.

I hope I didn't miss anyone since only Noelle (and her dad) found me tonight. I don't recall any extra texts on my phone. But there were a decent amount of other people there, besides our little group. Unfortunately, the weather didn't cooperate, but I got some cool pics of the storm clouds rolling in, and the lecture on the giant observatory in Lake Geneva was quite fascinating. I really enjoyed it. I highly recommend the LCAS "regular" meetings too, if you're able to attend at the Volo Bog location in the future.

If we do luck out with a patch of clear sky, lawn chairs and extra bug spray are recommended too!

Hi guys. I checked the hourly weather forecast and a storm is supposed to roll in right around the time we'd be getting ready to go outside to view after the free program inside. However, since it's still too early to tell and the storm could possibly "miss" the area (since that does happen sometimes), I'm going to take a gamble and go. We can at least enjoy the free program that starts at 8:30 since it's indoors. I don't have a smart phone so I won't be able to post last minute updates after I leave work. To find me, just send me a text at[masked]-5374. My name is Mary. I'll be bringing my brother's sky viewing binoculars just in case, since he won't be joining us tonight with his telescope after all. I'll be there some time between 7:30 and 8:30, so don't worry if you can't find me right away if you get there first. A bite to eat after may also be an option for those interested. (Dino's Den in Fox Lake).

P.S. I am a true NEWBIE with astronomy, so you may want to ask other folks you see there with telescopes detailed questions if you're a newbie too. We can learn together.

Backup Idea: There is a (possible) chance it might storm Friday night, which would cancel the sky viewing, obviously. If that happens, I'll be using Dino's Den eatery, as a backup "hangout" in Fox Lake (near the Fox Lake movie theater). It's just a little bit North of Volo, not too far at all. They have later hours Friday and Saturday nights. http://local.yahoo.com/details?id=17156049&stx=dino%27s+den&csz=Fox+Lake+IL

They have free wi-fi, so you can bring your laptops and show off your all your geeky knowledge about the sky if you like while we all visit, have a meal, etc. Let's keep an eye on the weather forecast Friday as it gets later. I don't have a smart phone, so I'll try and check the weather update online before I leave work Friday around 5:00. I'll post another update Friday. I just wanted to post Dino's as a backup idea if storm clouds to roll in that night. I'll post my contact info Friday too.

I forgot to mention that certain types of binoculars can be used for viewing the sky. So if you can't afford a telescope, check out this link for info on binoculars for astronomy. http://www.skyandtelescope.com/howto/howtoequipment/3389576.html

Ok, I picked a date and a place. They have something coming up open to the public on this specific date. However, read their website, because it looks like even their "private" meetings are open to the public too. I can also post updates on where we can all meet once we're there, contact info, etc.

Lets do something out in the burbs. I really don't care for the city. We can do a star gazing night. Rost marshmellows over a fire.

I would like more events to take place in the burbs. Weekends work best for me.

Well isn't it supposed to be cloudy and rainy? If so they may as well cancel it. I'll schedule something in this group if we get two or three others to go to one too. Any preference on which one?

    • BeatrixKiddo

Sorry, I wasn't able to go to either of the most recent ones (including the Wauconda one tonight), but don't hesitate to schedule more of these for the rest of your members if they might be interested. It might be a good way for some of you to get together more regularly in Lake County, instead of scheduling stuff down in the city.

Yes we would be interested. Can someone forward me the dates and times etc

I'm planning a stargazing meetup trip out of the city during summertime. Looks like Lake County could be a nice spot =)
