Telescope camping trip to darker skies

Some people I work with are going to shabbona lake state park. They are in the yellow on the light pollution map. We will be there 6/6, 6/7 and returning 6/8. It's 30 min west of aurora. You can reserve campsites in advance. I will be brining my nexstar 6se and my vx mount with canon DSLR and lenses.

Just an FYI, it's best to reserve your spot early. Illinois state parks now use Reserveamerica.com to reserve camp sites. I will be at campsite 121, it's the closest to the boat docks and the camp store.

Two suggested "green" spots, though farther afield, are:
1.) Apple River Canyon State Park, toward Galena, IL, an old favorite of the Chicago Astronomical Society.
2.) Panther Creek State Fish and Wildlife Area, toward Springfield, IL, site of the Illinois Dark Skies Star Party.

Hi Claire if you are already planning on going to either of these any time soon, let us know and we can get it scheduled here, thanks!

Apple canyon has really dark skies from what I hear, however it's a primitive camp ground. No showers or electric. I have a power tank but if a member doesn't then they won't be able to power their goto or laptops for guiding.

This sounds really interesting Mike. I've also got a 6SE, and would love to know how to hook up a camera. I'll definitely try and make this if I can.

There are a few ways to hook up a camera to it. You can hook up the camera to the visual back or the eye piece. The biggest obsticle is the nexstar alt az mount. The spur gears aren't smooth so unless the object is really bright you will want to record the object as an avi video and stack them in registack or other programs to get a final image. That is why I got the vx mount to mount my canon cameras and lenses. Since i already had apo lenses for my slr cameras I didn't need to pick up an apo scope to do galaxies and nebula.
