Beginner Bootcamp and/or Just Get Outside!

Forest Glen Preserve, IL – Beginner Trip

This is our second beginner trip intended to help those that are interested in getting into backpacking as well as giving others in our group an excuse to get out for the night. Approximately three hours away from Chicago, Forest Glen is an easy introduction to backpacking and gives you an opportunity to work some of the kinks out before going on bigger trips.  We'll be hiking approximately 11 miles over two days with various terrain, some which can be strenuous at times.

Directions as well as trail and preserve information can be found at http://www.vccd.org/giforestglen.html. Latitude/Longitude: [masked], [masked]

Our itinerary:
Carpools will leave Chicago Saturday @ 7:30 a.m. and meet at the staff office at approximately 11:30. We'll take the opportunity to do a gear shakedown for the beginners (highly recommended) and start the hike at noon. The hike will go clockwise along the backpack trail and we will camp at East Camp. The next morning, we will continue on the trail out to our cars, grab some lunch and head home.

Meetup Cost: $5 plus car and $1 suggested donation per person (for the park). Individuals are responsible for splitting gas within their own car pools.

All attendees need to understand that while I and others in the group will try to look out for your well being, YOU are ultimately responsible for your own safety. Please be sure of your physical ability to hike the 11 miles over variable terrain with your pack on. It's no fun if you underestimate your ability and then have to be rescued. (I can't stress this enough.)

Everybody attending are responsible for bringing their own equipment i.e. adequate shelter, sleeping bag, stove and food. If you do not have any of these items please say so and we will try and find someone who would be willing to share. You can also rent items at your local REI. It's not fun waiting in a car because you didn't bring what you were supposed to. If you would like a gear list and any tips, please feel free to let me know.

Just like Chad's trips, alcohol and tobacco are allowed on my trips. :) However, PLEASE drink responsibly (not stupidly) and remember to pack out what you pack in. I promote leave no trace (lnt.org).

Nice video, I like the individual weights for your gear. What is your overall pack weight? I might have missed that in the video.

      April 23, 2013

    • Mark

Hi Patrick, Thanks! Overall pack weight for that kit is around 20 pounds.

    April 14, 2013

Hi Samuel! Sure thing. Not sure if you'll make it on this trip (the waitlist is kinda big right now) but if not this one, there should be others in the future.

Any idea where the meeting point in Chicago is going to be on that Saturday morning?

    April 3, 2013

    • Mark

Hi Randy! Once we get closer to the date, I'll try to organize some carpools. We'll meet down there, not up here at 11:30. Carpools will leave here around 7:30 to make it there by then.

I see there are two people on the waiting list for this and hubs said we might as well try this on our own before subjecting a group to a trial run =) We'll miss the fun but hopefully will be able to join you next time.
