The Trap Hills are a little known gem of the Northern Midwest. The North Country Trail runs through the Ottawa National Forest, with scattered vistas stretching 50 miles or more and gorgeous escarpment lookouts along the way.
We will hike approximately a 13-15 mile section of the NCT running across the Trap Hills from the Old Victoria Settlement to Norwich Road. Free dispersed camping is allowed anywhere off trail (except for a small block of private land that the trail crosses).
More details can be found on the Peter Wolfe Chapter of the NCT website under suggested hike #8 at http://www.northcountrytrail.org/pwf/traphills.htm#Suggested%20day%20hikes%20in%20the%20Trap%20Hills
More info on the NTC Trap Hills section can be found at: http://www.northcountrytrail.org/pwf/map_links_west.htm
1) Leave Friday and meet at the Old Victoria Settlement where we will either sleep in a 3 wall shelter and/or camp. Friday evening (if time allows) or Saturday morning, we will shuttle cars to Norwich Rd.
2) Saturday morning we will begin our hike on the North Country Trail, and hike to somewhere around Whiskey Hollow Creek area (approximately 9.5 miles), where we will camp for the night.
3) Sunday we will hike approximately 4 miles to Norwich Road, recover cars, and meet for lunch and beer.
The hiking is intermediate to strenuous(for mid west standards) but well worth it since you are rewarded with stunning lookouts and views that stretch for miles after each hill summit. Truly one of my favorite hikes in the mid west! If you love the Porkies and have not been to the Trap Hills, I highly recommend it.
Please note that while I and others in the group will try to look out for your well being, YOU are ultimately responsible for your own safety and anyone that you bring. Please don't go unless you're confident of your (and this includes those you bring) abilities to go and have adequate gear for backpacking conditions and inclement weather. This is a wilderness area and bad things can happen.
Everybody attending is responsible for bringing their own equipment i.e. shelter, sleeping bag, stove and food. Don't sign up if you have not backpacked before. I will ask people to not come if I'm not confident of their abilities.
We all enjoy campfires, but please make sure all fire is completely out if you are the last one to leave it. I promote leave no trace, so carry out what you carry in.
If you have a dog and would like to bring it, find out if that’s acceptable with the park and bring it along. However, please let me know if you are bringing a dog.
We will finalize numbers the week before, and figure out driving arrangements.
Meetup Cost: $5. No refunds for meetup cost. Individuals are responsible for splitting gas within their own car pools.
