Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park - Trip Option #1

The Porcupine Mountain Wilderness is always one of our most popular backpacking trips. Due to some permit and backcountry changes at the park, we had to make changes to our trip this year, including limiting the number of people and increasing the fee to obtain permits ahead of time.

This is a moderate to advanced trip. As we get more leaders to sign up, we can open up the trip to additional people and post separate trips for the regular route (Lake Superior to Big Carp River trail) and an easier alternative as well.

This particular trip is rated moderate to advanced so read carefully and make sure you can hike the requisite number of miles. If you do not feel confident, sign up for one of the other trips that will be posted.

Friday, we will backcountry camp at the regular Lake of the Clouds group site. If you cannot meet with us on Friday, meet us at the trailhead on Saturday morning. Saturday, we will park our cars at the midpoint of the Escarpment trail along M-107 and hike between 12-14 miles via Escarpment, Government Peak, and Correction Line Trails to the Big Carp River trail and pick a site along the BC. On Sunday we will finish up the BC River Trail and the rest of the Escarpment (between 9-11 miles depending where we camp Sat night), recover cars, and drive to get food and beer.

Disclaimers:
Please note that while I and others in the group will try to look out for your well being, YOU are ultimately responsible for your own safety and anyone that you bring. Please don't go unless you're confident of your (and this includes those you bring) abilities to go and have adequate gear for backpacking conditions and inclement weather. This is a wilderness area and bad things can happen.

Everybody attending is responsible for bringing their own equipment i.e. shelter, sleeping bag, stove and food. Don't sign up if you haven't done backpacking before. I will ask people to not come if I'm not confident of their abilities.

We all enjoy campfires, but please make sure all fire is completely out if you are the last one to leave it. I promote leave no trace, so carry out what you carry in.

If you have a dog and would like to bring it, find out if that’s acceptable with the park and bring it along. However, please let me know if you are bringing a dog.
We will finalize numbers the week before, and figure out driving arrangements.

Cost for this trip is $14, which includes a $5 Meet-up fee and backcountry permit fee for Friday and Saturday night.  No refunds will be offered. We will pick up permits on Friday upon arrival and possibly Saturday morning if we do not make the visitor center before it closes on Friday.
Individuals are responsible for splitting gas within their own car pools. A park admission pass is required for each car parking at the Lake of the Clouds parking lot. (If you park on M-107 and walk in, you can avoid the fee).

Great hiking! I was impressed with myself as well as everybody else on this trip. Tough terrain, wet weather and smiling/laughing faces throughout! Great to see new faces as well as the familiar.

Group site was taken. Hike further down the trail up to the lake, cross the bridge and take an immediate left to continue along the lake towards the cabin. You'll see us about second or third site along. Look for lights.

Friday, to get to the Lake of the Clouds group site, go to the overlook and begin hiking on the Escarpment trail (trail to the left when facing the lake). About 1/4 mile down, the North Mirror Lake trail shoots off to the right (very easy to miss!!). Take the right turn and go down the hill. You will see us camping in a wooded area as you are heading down the hill on you right. If you reach Mirror Lake, you have gone too far. On Saturday, meet at the trailhead for the Escarpment trail (off 107 between the trail heads for Lake Superior Trail and Government Peak Trail) at 10am Chicago time (11am Michigan time). David will be at the Lake Superior Trailhead starting the hike for trip option #2 approx. 1/2 hour earlier, if you are lost and need directions. FYI, there is a marathon happening on the trail Saturday morning. By the time we start hiking, most of the runners will hopefully have gone through already. If parking is an issue, park along the side of county road 107.

I will be at the park Friday early afternoon and will pick up the backcountry camping permits for Friday and Saturday for the leaders of each trip (4 hikers are allowed per permit). Each car is responsible for obtaining a daily or annual pass, otherwise you may be issued a parking ticket if parked at one of the lots. If you park along the county road and hike in, you can avoid the fee of the parking pass. Friday night we will camp at the Lake of the Clouds group site. If you cannot find us, meet your trip leader at the trail head in the morning. Cell phone reception is difficult to obtain once you enter the park. If you need additional directions or information, please contact me prior to Thursday evening, or one of the leaders.

Hi everyone. I am looking to carpool anyone leaving from around the Aurora area? Can hit the road around 3, perhaps earlier depending on work. Thanks!

    September 26, 2013

  • Chelcie E.

Hey, I can leave on Friday about any time. I live in Madison, WI so depending on the route drivers take, I'm likely on the way. Or I can meet up with a driver.

  • Chad G.

I can likely leave as early as 330 from Bucktown (Chicago). I can drive but only take one and mileage is crap so looking to get in on a ride.

    September 16, 2013

  • Trinda

I guess there won't be a movie night this weekend, after all.

    September 16, 2013

    • Trinda

Heather was polling about it on Facebook:
Did facebook polls disappear? I'm looking to plan another movie night. Some possible dates: 9/21,10/5, 10/12. Interested and what date works?
10/5 was winning, but I'm sure we'd all rather backpack!

    • Trinda

      I commented about the trip

      September 16, 2013

Some individuals are able to RSVP and send payment and others are not. I will lock the RSVPs for now until the issue is resolved and just post here with time/date to RSVP for the time being.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
