Daniel Boone National Forest - Beaver Creek Wilderness

Beaver Creek Wilderness is part of the Daniel Boone National Forest.  It has sandstone cliffs, natural arches, hardwood forests, and more.  Because this is a wilderness area, trails are NOT maintained, therefore, expect mileage to be higher than posted below if we lose the trail.  I have not been to this wilderness before, so I am basing all of my information from conversations with the rangers.  Itinerary may need to be altered depending on conditions.  Expect strenuous hiking conditions, bushwhacking, and multiple stream crossings on this trip.

Itinerary/Directions:

Friday:  We will camp near the Middle Ridge Trailhead.  From Sommerset, take US-27 South for approximately 20 miles. Turn on to CR 1326/Middle Ridge Road and you will see the trailhead on your right within a couple blocks.  According to the ranger, there is a gate on the road near by.  Park at the trailhead, cross the gate and hike down approximately just a little over 1/2 mile.  The ranger stated that there should be a wildlife clearing on the left, and it would be a good place to camp for the night.  I will try to get there early and assess this spot and will put lights up to guide those coming in at night.  If plans change or this spot does not work for some reason, I will leave a note in the parking lot/trailhead area to guide you.  If you can't find us, meet us at the trailhead in the morning.

Primitive camping is permitted anywhere in the Wilderness as long as you remain 300 feet from any road or stream and out of sight of any trail.  No camping in in rock shelters is allowed.

Saturday:  We will meet at the Middle Ridge Trailhead at 8am CST to shuttle cars to Three Forks trailhead parking lot (approx. 6mi away). We will hike approximately 7-9 miles then camp.

Sunday:  We will get on the trail early and hike approx. 8-10 miles shuttle cars back, and celebrate with food and beer.

Disclaimers:

Please note that while I and others in the group will try to look out for your well being, YOU are ultimately responsible for your own safety and anyone that you bring. Please don't go unless you're confident of your (and this includes those you bring) abilities to go and have adequate gear for backpacking conditions and inclement weather. This is a wilderness area and bad things can happen.

Everybody attending is responsible for bringing their own equipment i.e. shelter, sleeping bag, stove and food. Don't sign up if you have not backpacked before.  I will ask people to not come if I'm not confident of their abilities.

We all enjoy campfires, but please make sure all fire is completely out if you are the last one to leave it.  I promote leave no trace, so carry out what you carry in.

If you have a dog and would like to bring it, find out if that’s acceptable with the park and bring it along. However, please let me know if you are bringing a dog.

Hey everyone, I am late in responding but I was glad that I had a chance to meet you all at the 3 forks Boone Beaver Creek Wilderness. I had a good time even thought it got a little cold. 17 degrees in my hammock would have been colder. Good thing I brought my tent, but I think that the spider that I ate during dinner gave me the extra energy for the cold night.

    Part 1
Well I finally got to post some comments and pictures but give me a break I had a lot to do and old guys move slow. I had a really enjoyable time taking in the beautiful Beaver Creek area. It was a bit challenging finding the trails; I'm glad you guys could find them or I'd still be wondering around out there and it would be easier if they installed lifts on some of the hills. The hiking fun was only exceeded by the socializing we had around the camp fire, exchanging food, drink, and true stories. I also was overly surprised that I was surrounded by unrestrained Bear fans and didn't get mugged. Maybe it was the little wieners I bribed you with.

    Part 2
I'm also excited about a new found friend. Yep, found two small ticks on me. One died in the removal process but the other one survived. I put it on a tissue and when I turned my back he crawled off and tried to attack me. After fighting him off, it took a while to corner him. He was a tough tenacious little bugger but I wrestled him down and now he's mine. We made a deal and I have him on a little leash and I'm training him. I'm trying to get him to sleep with me to keep me warm and fight off the stray ticks that may want me; so far it's working well. He's really cute and I'm looking forward to showing him off on our next hike; Jason took a nice portrait but he hasn't posted it yet. Well thank you everyone, especially Anna, for putting this hike together and for showing this old guy a really memorable time. Hope ta see ya all agin.

Thanks guys for making this trip a blast :) I enjoyed meeting new people and seeing old faces again. What an excellent time around the camp fire joking around and hearing great stories!! Even after a multitude of stream crossings (I stopped counting at # 12 around mile 3 or 4) and when temps dropped well below freezing, spirits never dampened. It was great to practice some bushwhacking and trail locating skills. See you all on the next trip :)

Great outing. Thanks for organizing. It was good to meet some of the Appleton group. Glad that Armando was able to make it. More than a dozen creek crossings and nobody fell in!

http://rainypass.com/ here is the website that i was talking about that repairs gear or adds pit zips and re-stuffs sleeping bags. Never tried them but maybe an option to rehab old gear.

I thought long and hard about jumping in this one this week but the combination of being sick and cold weather is going to keep me on the sidelines. Have fun.

Hey Rob. We're still working out carpools. Not sure if you're getting my email or it's being gobbled up by a spam filter. If you're still in and want to ride with us please contact me soon. Dennis and I are leaving from Wisconsin Thursday morning and passing through your area. It would be great if you could meet us at Bruce's house in Libertyville to save time/traffic. Anna said you could ride back with her and Colin on Sunday if you don't want to stay longer. Please provide a phone number too if you can.

    Thanks!

I just checked the current weather outlook for the trip. It looks like the warm spell is over down there too. Saturday's low is 20 degrees and rain is also possible Friday/Saturday so pack for cold weather! Here's the NOAA weather report for Somerset, KY: http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=37.0920222&lon=-84.60410839999997&site=all&smap=1&searchresult=Somerset%2C%20KY%2C%20USA#.Uowa-uKySMc

Just re-sent it to you to your email address that you provided upon RSVP and also via the Meetup site. Let me know if you still do not get it.

  • Jason P.

Just a note for anyone thinking about going or already attending: If we don't end up carpooling with current attendees, Dennis and I will drive together and most likely head down Thursday morning. We would also like to extend the trip through Monday or Tuesday and drive back on Tuesday or Wednesday. Not sure what other areas we would explore yet but open to suggestions. I'll hopefully have more updates when I know more about our travel arrangements/carpools. Message or call me with questions![masked]

Hi Anna, as much as I'd love to join you for this it's a bit far for just two days. Let me know what you think of the area though. I may set something like this up for the group next spring but do 3-4 days. Have a great trip!

    November 15, 2013

    • Anna

No problem, Mary. I'll let you know about the area the next time I see you on a trip.

Just in case anyone needs a copy of Beaver Creek Wilderness map, it is available in the files section.

Hey ..wanted to join but other commitments came up...nevertheless have fun...!!!

    November 12, 2013

    • Jason P.

Sorry you can't make it. Maybe I'll catch ya in the Porkies in January if someone bails. It filled up before I had a chance to sign up!

      November 14, 2013

  • Jason P.

Has anyone discussed carpools yet? Mary and I live fairly close so we could probably drive to Chicago together. When is everyone else heading down?

    November 13, 2013

    • Anna

The plan is to head back on Sunday, but if you guys want to stick around head back Monday that's cool too. I was planning on checking out the Natural Arch Scenic Area (just a few miles south) on Friday after establishing camp, if all goes well and I have enough daylight time. I can give you guys a report and if it's worth it, you could check it out on Monday. There are also some nice looking trails and open campgrounds in the eastern and southern sections, but it's about 1-2hrs further.

      1 · November 14, 2013

    • Jason P.

I'll do just about anything to extend a trip if someone gives me a excuse to. Getting down there either Thursday or Friday will work for me. With the exception of additional traffic expected Monday, staying Sunday night certainly is appealing. It's about 10hrs one way/no stops from up here.

      November 14, 2013

  • Natalie

I am very sorry to say I have to back out of this one too. :-(

    November 13, 2013

Cool, we'd love to have you join us! Let's talk closer to the trip date. You can meet us at the Middle Ridge trailhead Sat morning, or if you are coming later on Saturday, you can drive and park where our shuttled cars will be (by the Three Forks trailhead) and meet us on the trail for the remainder of the hike, camping, and hike out :)
