In conjunction with London Explorers.

Walk length 12 miles/19km approx. Circular.

This walk takes in the wonderful views of the South Downs countryside from the famous landmark of Devil's Dyke to Edburton Hill.

Walk Description

Devil's Dyke is a downland comber or cleft that is about half a mile long and 300ft deep. A local legend connects the dyke with the devil. It was said that the devil was trying to flood all the churches of the Waeld around Sussex; he dug a trench to enable this at night. It seems he was disturbed by a woman carrying a candle, mistaking this for dawn he left leaving the trench unfinished - the present Devil's Dyke.

The Dyke has fantastic views towards the Clayton Windmills, Chanctonbury Ring, Haywards Heath and Ashdown Forest. It has long been a tourist destination from the 19th century, and in 1928 HRH the Duke of York dedicated the Dyke Estate for public use. It is also now also part of the South Downs National Park.

Brighton train station is just 6 miles away and the number 77 bus (nicknamed the Freedom bus) goes to Devil's Dyke.

Lunch & Finish:

Please bring a packed lunch and water for the walk. The walk should finish at about 4.30pm and include a 30 min lunch stop and pub(probably at the end), however the time may be earlier or later than this depending on the weather and pace (we have a relaxed pace which includes sightseeing and photography).

Meeting & Transport:

Meet outside the Devil's Dyke pub for 09.45am for the walk to start at 10.15am; see picture right.

Car: Free car park at Devil's Dyke.

Train & Bus from London
The 08.36am train from London Victoria gets to Brighton for 09.27am See Southern Trains

You then need to catch the number 77 bus at 09.42am (stop E) from the rail station that gets to Devil Dyke for 10.01am. See Brighton & Hove Buses

Please note the organizers will be at Devil's Dyke so you will need to catch the train and bus on your own.

I would encourage you to seek other members who are driving, or take advantage of a group save on the train. See: Group Save Advice

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
