Cold War Secrets and a Pilgrims Trail

  • Apr 27, 2013 · 10:15 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

In conjunction with London Explorers.

Walk length 12.5 miles/20km approx. Circular.

A varied walk following ancient paths across fields & woodland with a visit to a former Cold War Bunker & Civil Defence Centre at Kelvedon Hatch.

Walk Description

This walk follows a circular trail from Shenfield station in Essex across ancient woodland (many old pollareded (pruned) trees dating back over hundreds of years) & past old listed farm buildings. In many cases some of the paths on this walk were used during the 12th century on pilgrimages from the north to Canterbury.

Kelvedon Hatch was set up initially as an RAF ROTOR Station (1950's air defence radar to detect soviet bombers), & then was developed finally into a Regional Government HQ designed to shelter up to 600 government and military staff in the advent of a nuclear war; it is the largest and deepest of its kind open to the public in South East England.

With the end of the cold war Kelvedon Hatch was decommissioned in 1992 & converted into a private museum.

Lunch & Finish: Bring water and a snack lunch. This walk should finish at about 4.30pm, however the time may be earlier or later than this depending on the weather and pace (we have a relaxed pace which includes sightseeing and photography).

The lunch stop for this walk will involve visiting Kelvedon Hatch bunker for a least an hour and then a picnic lunch nearby; we will have a pub stop at the end of the walk near Shenfield Rail Station.

Meeting & Transport

Meet outside Shenfield Rail Station for 10.15am for the walk to start at 10.30am

Car: Saturday parking at Shenfield station is £2.50 for the day, & free street parking may be available nearby (please leave enough time to park).

Train:
The 10.02am train from London Liverpool Street gets to Shenfield for for 10.24am
See Great Anglia

I would encourage you to seek other members who are driving, or take advantage of a group save on the train.
See: Group Save Advice

Museum Cost
The cost for the walk is £3 however if you want to visit the bunker when we have our lunch stop the museum is £6.50 which is the group discount price (we need at least 15 to get the group discount). This is self guided with a handset.
See Kelvedon Hatch.

Please make a note of the organizers numbers - Leon[masked] and Colin 07709305681.
