Walk length 14 miles/22.5 km approx. Circular.

A spectacular island coastal walk encompassing two of the highest points on the island including St Catherine's Hill and St Boniface Down.

Walk Description

The walk starts from the car park at Blackgang Chine, a now-destroyed coastal ravine and the site of an amusement park, before taking an inland trail between St Catherine's Hill (237m) and the highest point on the island St Boniface Down (241m).

On the peak of St Catherine's Hill is St Catherine's Oratory, also known as the 'Pepperpot' the second oldest lighthouse in Britain and dating back to the 14th Century.

St Boniface Down close to the seaside town of Ventnor was the site of a radar station in 1940 that was bombed by Ju-87 Stukas; the scene was reconstructed in the film the Battle of Britain.

This if the first of a series of three walks across the beautiful Isle of Wight, the largest island in England and designated as the Isle of Wight Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with chalk cliffs, open grassland and woods.

Accommodation and Meeting

Camping at www.Stoats-farm.co.uk Postcode PO39 0HE

Stoats farm camp site is south of Freshwater and just north of Tennyson Down.

Same format to the National Parks we visited in 2013. The cost for each walk will be £5, with a limit of 35 people for each day. Everyone can have the chance to do their own things on some of the days or join the group for a walk; this system worked well in 2013.

Everyone will be encouraged to arrange their own accommodation, either camping, Youth hostel, or B&B. We will try to suggest locations as near together as possible so the group can meet up after the walks in the evening.  Transport will be by car sharing.

Lunch and Finish

Please bring a packed lunch and water for each walk. Each walk should finish at about 4.30pm and include a 30 min snack lunch stop and pub at the end, however the time may be earlier or later than this depending on the weather and pace (we have a relaxed pace which includes sightseeing and photography).

Please make a note of the organizers numbers - Leon 07950125826.

Wow although this was a longer one than expected, this was the most amazing walk, stunning flowers, wildlife and coastal scenery, plus great company. The sun shone and the ice cream went down a treat! Thank you!

Lynne at Stoats Farm Campsite has asked if when booking (or if have booked) to let them know you are with Chiltern Explorers, as if enough of us they can give a group booking rate. Also if anybody is in need of a tent, I have 2 spare.

Four of us have booked into the Frenchmans Cove guest house which is 500 yds from the camp site. Here are the prices quoted in the area per person for the accommodation (3 nights, double ensuite including breakfast): Frenchmans Cove £126, Highdown Inn £225 and Weston Manor £275. Yesterday Weston Manor had one single room available £140. I understand a room in the local youth hostel is £20 per night. All booked and looking forward to it!!! :) x

I have just booked in the highdown inn which is the closest pub and across the road from the stoats farm campsite. The Weston manor b& b which is right next door to the camp site is Gorgeous but will not take dogs. There are still a couple of rooms available in the inn and the b& b is available but she says it will book fast now it is the new year.
