3D Thursdays: No question too stupid intro to 3D printing

I propose a regular Thursday night 3D printing salon. Some people suggested we needed more structure at our last 3d meetup so: We can start with an in-depth presentation on a topic in 3D printing and degenerate from there. People can bring printers and prints to show off. I can make presentations for the first few weeks until other folks come forward or you all get tired of hearing me talk. I suggest we start with a ground-up intro to 3D printing next Thursday. I would give a broad intro to the topic followed by a soup to nuts demo of the process starting with a model and finishing with a print. We would have time to answer any questions no matter how basic. Future topics I could present on would include:

Scanning for printing
Modelling for printing
Post-print finishing
Making 3d terrain models
Lost print casting
3D portraiture/caricature

I think Steve Delaire has experience with industrial printers so maybe he can jump in some night and tell us about the big boy toys.

I know Andy Cohen has a lot of experience and interest in the topic so hopefully he can give us a talk some time.

My hope is to get a core group of enthusiasts at Chimera who can work on building simple inexpensive printers that we can have classes to build. We can make some printers for ourselves and for the shop and some money for the landlord.

Excellent resources Steve. I'm planning a large laser using their v-slot extrusions.

Please bring it Andy. I know a lot of folks have high hopes for a super cheap printer. I'd love to see how it works (or why it doesn't)

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
