English Study and Practice for Non-Native Speakers

Note: Please try to RSVP as early as possible, preferably by Thursday evening. If the numbers are too low (less than 5), I may cancel the meetup for that weekend.

I often see members of this group looking for time to study English, so I would like to give the non-native English speakers in our group an opportunity to improve their English just like they have given us the chance to improve our Chinese, Japanese, or Korean skills.

I also hope that by extending this opportunity, we will encourage more native speakers of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean to participate and aid our CJK practice on Wednesdays.

Our practice will include games, discussion, and reading activities. The reading activities will be conducted on a bi-weekly (every other week) basis. When we do not have a reading activity, we will do discussion based activities instead.

Any and all suggestions for methods, activities, etc. are welcome.

This group was created to function as an exchange. We help you and you help us.

For native speakers of Chinese, Japanese, or Korean, we hope that you will attend our meeting on Wednesday to help our language learners.

Also, this is a group for serious study.

Most of the study and language-exchange groups out there are more social than educational and more than anything our group wants to help non-native speakers improve and better enjoy the English language.

Of course, we will have fun with games and discussion, and we may have coffee or lunch after our meeting, but our focus is on learning. You will make friends here, but if that is your only purpose, it would be better to try another group.

Finally, for any native English speakers who are interested in helping, please contact me (Ajani) before RSVP'ing. Currently, we have a good amount of volunteers to help us teach English, but we are open to new teachers under the following conditions.

1. You are a regular member of our Wednesday group (regular means you have attended the meetups consistently for at least a month). This requirement is essential.

2. You can adapt to our system of teaching/study and have no problem preparing materials in advance.

3. You are interested in helping out our group and not just looking for conversation partners or dates.

Again, it is absolutely vital that you contact me before coming to our Saturday meetup otherwise it might result in an awkward experience for all of us.

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, feel free to contact me (Ajani).

How to find us...

Go to 53rd street and Lexington Ave. The building is across the street from a CVS pharmacy. on 53rd st, there are two main entrances. The top entrance in the picture is on 53rd st between Lexington avenue and 3rd avenue. The bottom entrance is on the corner of 53rd st. and Lexington avenue. The building is called the Citigroup Center but it the area where we sit is also called the Atrium Shops and Cafes.

Can anyone tell me why there are no meetups on Saturday since this week?

    September 23, 2013

I explained this in my comment below but the Saturday meetups are on hiatus for the time being. I and some of our regular teachers will be too busy to manage the meetup for at least a month, so I felt that it was best to cancel the meetups until I can figure out how best to resume.

Sorry for the inconvenience. Hopefully, we will have things back to normal by November.

Could I join today's session? This is the first time for me to join meetup. I'm a Japanese and just came to NY this month.

    Hi everyone,

This week, we will do vocabulary, idioms, and a round of discussion in which I will prepare a few questions/topics of discussion.

Also, as I mentioned to our members last week, this Saturday will be our last session for at least a month.

The simple reason is that I have been overwhelmed by many of my responsibilities and need a break to concentrate on some other things. I hoped that we have been helpful to you and I apologize if you were looking forward to attending in the near future. Of course, we may start again sometime in Oct/Nov, but I can't make any promises at this moment.

    See you tomorrow!

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
