"Chinese Culture as Shaped by the Chinese Language" Lecture @China Institute

A renowned linguist, Prof. Pan Wenguo is the former Dean of the School of International Chinese Studies of the East China Normal University and the current President of the Association for Comparative Studies of English and Chinese of China. His central theme in this lecture is that Chinese culture is to a large extent shaped by the Chinese language and its script. Prof. Pan will specifically discuss 5 aspects of the Chinese culture from a linguistic perspective: 1) polysemy in the academic culture; 2) brevity in the political culture; 3) rhyming in the pedagogical culture, 4) homonym in folklore and 5) fun in language games.)

This lecture is FREE, but advance registration is required. I assume Prof. Pan will give the lecture in Chinese so it should be a good chance to listen to authentic academic Chinese and interact with other Chinese native speakers.

Hope to see you there.

Of what I could understand was very interesting. Can't believe there are over 100 words pronounced as "yi"...

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
