Aug. 18 Skype Chinese Hour: Zenme Xue? - How We Learn Chinese

  • Aug 18, 2013 · 2:00 PM

Huanying! Chinese Workshop Paris is now open! I'm excited to meet you all on Skype and get you to start talking Chinese.

First thing first. I hope to get to know one another a little bit, and then talk about how you learn (if you have been learning) and what I've found to be some of the most effective ways to not just learn, but retain your new Chinese. These will, of course, inform how I teach at our Chinese Workshop.

If you are starting from scratch, try the following sentence and we'll practice at the workshop. You'll feel quite accomplished coming in already speaking!

Wo jiao ______ (your name).

Don't worry about the precise pronunciation or the famous (notorious?) "tones". The syntax (not necessarily grammar but context and complete expression) is the most important thing to get right.

See? You've already learned something, and we haven't even started!

We will inevitably have an initial group of mixed levels. But check us out and you just may find something useful. We'll see where everyone is at in terms of levels and move forward accordingly - maybe try graded Skype hours next.

To join, log on to Skype by 1:55 pm (Paris time). Request the contact "moreopenmind"(New York) (you won't be able to see me - I have thousands of students at this point and some may call if they see me "on") and message, "Chinese Workshop", and I will conference-call everyone at 2 pm. Audio only, no webcam (to stay free). The Skype Meetup is planned for one hour.

Skype is perfect for practicing listening and speaking. And hopefully it gets the workshop well underway by the time I get to Paris this fall. Check us out!

*Skype Hour lessons are conducted in English and Chinese (Mandarin).

It would be so much fun for me. I only meet chinese by skype at http://preply.com/en/chinese-by-skype and it would be nice to learn in person.
