In a collaboration between the London Mandarin Learners and the Chinese Viewfinders' Club, we will hold a bi-monthly meetup (tentatively 1st and 3rd Monday of each month) of short story/article reading followed with open discussion - one half conducted in Chinese and the other half in English.
This time we will read "The Busy Trap" in English and Chinese - an written by Tim Kreider and published in the New York Times last year which subsequently went viral.
The English version can be downloaded here:
The Chinese version can be downloaded here:
Anki Flash Cards Sets Per Paragraph are here:
Mp3 file for the Chinese text here (thanks to XiaoMin for recording this). Youtube version (with highlighted text during narration) here.
We look forward to seeing you.
Also, if everyone could have a think about the format for future meetings. Ideally it would be:
a) a book in both English and Chinese in digital form
b) ideally containing essays or short stories
c) with audio recordings
Having looked online - the collected short stories of Lu Xun might be the nearest thing to this. Another possibility is to continue with other essays in the Graded Chinese Reader (however for native Chinese speakers this might not be so interesting). If anyone else has suggestions please say.
[masked] Welcome & ice-breaking
[masked] Read the 1st half of the article in Chinese & discuss (or the other way round)
[masked] Read the 2nd half in English & discuss
2045 onwards Networking
We'll take turn to read the article, so everyone will have an opportunity to speak and learn from others! The meetups are intended for intermediate to advanced learners of English and Mandarin - though we will give long advance notice of the material to be covered such that if you feel you can handle it, please come along.
Do come and invite your friends who are learning the language too - in one language you will be mainly learning, and in the other, mainly helping others learn.
