A very good debate I recently had with a high-ranking Christian representative inspired me to launch this Meetup group.

Most debates between Christians and Atheists are either highly philosophical ("What made existence come into existence?", "What triggered the Big Bang?", "Can we ever prove/disprove the existence of God?") or articulated around scientific inconsistencies in the Bible (miracles, as Christians would argue,) - In my experience though, these debates don't lead anywhere.

In this Meetup group, I would like to examine what is at the very centre of Christian faith: the Bible itself. The idea is that Christians and Atheists come together on a regular basis and discuss passages of the Bible which they have read and prepared beforehand. We can take into account historical facts as well, and we can also talk about relevant Bible research that has been carried out.

In order to have a fair debate, both camps, the Christian & the Atheist one, should be represented in equal numbers. People who participate should take religion seriously one way or another. Members of the group should also have read the Bible in the past or should at least be willing to read it within the context of this group. We would start with Genesis & continue throughout the Old Testament (maybe leaving out parts of Leviticus in order to prevent people from being bored out of their skulls), & after a while, (that is if we haven't fallen out by then, but I'm happy to provide tranquillizers) we will get to read and discuss the New Testament.

Although I am an evangelical atheist myself, I have no intentions of attacking anyone for their beliefs.  I would like our group to be held in a book club setting, where everyone can express their views on the texts we've read. In doing so, I am hoping to have a fruitful exchange of views on a fascinating book, which has had a deep impact on my life.
