Hello all.
I am planning a trip down to the Great Smoky Mountains over Labor Day. I did a 3 day, 2 night (Eagle Creek/Bote Mtn. Trail/Anthony Creek) 5 years ago and it was spectacular.
I would like to explore the eastern side of the park this time, but I am open to other routes. Planning to leave very early Saturday morning, driving back around noon on Monday.

I am looking for some of you backpackers to join in!

This was an outstanding trip! If you enjoy the back country this is one that you would have loved. The trails were well maintained and the campsites were each next to beautiful streams.

Why not leave Friday afternoon as opposed to Saturday AM. Hiking on Saturday might be more enjoyable if we didn't just finish spending 5 or 6 hours in the car.

    •  This trip confirms my belief that The Smokies is one of the best places to backpack in the US. A great choice of venue by Thomas. The trip pretty much had it all...plenty of stream crossings, elevation changes, trail mileage, scenery, and wildlife encounters, particularly the bear in the blackberry thicket and that stubborn rattlesnake who attempted to block the trail.
    •  We had a great time. The weather was perfect. We hiked a little over 25 miles, we hiked 5,800 feet down hill and 5,400 up hill. It was a great workout. Both campsites that we stayed at were very nice. There were many beautiful stream crossings. Some of them we made it across dry and some we did not. On our first day out we saw a bear not more than ten yards or so off of the trail. Pretty cool. On the second day we saw a timber rattler snake on the trail and this was no small snake. It was crossing the trail and stopped at the edge of the trail and coiled up and started rattling its tail. We stayed to the other side and all made it by OK. The third day was less eventful, but we did have about a 2500 feet climb the last 4.5 miles.
