Saturday Dinner at Amma's Kitchen

Amma's Kitchen is a vegetarian and vegan Indian restaurant. You can check out the menu at www.ammaskitchen.com. They don't open for dinner on Saturday until 5:30PM but have agreed to open for Meet-up at our usual dining time of 4PM!!!  If there is a large enough group, Amma's will serve a vegan buffet, otherwise we will order off the menu.

This meetup will be posted on the last Saturday of each month.

Hate to miss this but I have been sick for a couple days and don't want to spread the misery.

OMG could this be the best Indian buffet EVER?!! Everything so delicious, more choices than one could ever imagine, they went above and beyond with the quantity of different dishes, excellent!

Sorry, it looks like I've got a family issue and I won't be able to get away.

I know the owner of Amma's checks this site and I'm sure he is proud of his place and how much enthusiasm there is for the buffet. Amma's Kitchen doesn't open until 5:30 on Saturday for the public and agreed to open just for us at 4PM. I really can't comment on Amma's opening to the public, making Saturday a buffet night, advertising, pricing or anything like that. I watch way too much of restaurant impossible, and have friends in the restaurant business, and I know that the restaurant business is hard. What I am going to do is recruit more vegan buffet eaters myself. I have neighbors that I might be able to get to come. There are 564 people in this group and maybe if I send out more notices I can get 30 every month. We can all talk about it at dinner this Saturday and I'll discuss it with Amma's owner.

I am also an assistant organizer in CLEO - Cincinnati Lets Eat Out. I just sent an email to the entire group referring them to our site and informing everyone of the buffet. I'll do this each month from now on.

I just sent a message to the organizer of Dayton Vegan meetup asking her to send an email to their members informing them of our dinner this Saturday.

Pat, I think most of us would want to go for the buffet. Vegan items can be ordered at almost any Indian restaurant, and while I'm not putting down Ammas in any way (the food was excellent) I think what makes this outing special was the fact that there was such a huge selection of things that we could actually eat on one buffet. The novelty of it, and getting to sample more than one item off the menu. I was simply suggesting that we suggest to them that one way to offset the cost of the buffet if we happen to have fewer individuals at any given meeting would be to just make that Saturday a standard Vegan buffet night and advertise it themselves. I wasn't suggesting we didn't still meet as a group and have the back reserved for our group. Also, I'd be willing to pay more than the 10 dollars they charged for a vegan buffet. If five people (25 instead of 30) keep us from having the buffet, I'd rather they just charge up like 13 or even 15 a person and still have it.....?

I would be willing to pay $12-13.

Last month at Amma's was the first vegan meet-up that my husband and I attended. We were very impressed. We have been vegan for years and dining out always seem to involve a lot of work-questioning the server about ingredients, etc. It was wonderful to be able to enjoy the entire buffet without asking whether an item was vegan or not. What a great variety on Amma's buffet! And of course the company was excellent. I wouldn't see a problem with opening up the buffet to others if they let us have the back room. I'm all for encouraging the vegan lifestyle.

April - Personally, I won't mind driving down to try items on the regular menu. I see it as just another way to explore Amma's Kitchen. Attending our first buffet were 2 or 3 people who the owner had told about the buffet and who weren't members of meetup (and had never heard of meetup). I can't speak to the business plan of Amma's owner and whether or not he would do a buffet on our Saturday for the public. Personally, I really like our private area in the back where meetup people can get to know each better and have some nice conversation. When a restaurant is open to the public and you go in to eat by yourself, one doesn't (at least I don't) end up having great conversation with strangers seated around you.

Oh, I hope for the buffet. I have been to Amma's several times over the years for the regular menu and my reason for coming (in addition to seeing my vegan friends) is the buffet!

just trying to come up with some ideas so that we can secure with Ammas a buffet meeting without the scramble for numbers at the last minute. If they either opened to public/advertise themselves for that Saturday (much like they do on Weds afternoons) or perhaps charge a bit more per person? It would be worth it for everyone, I'm sure, to keep the buffet and all the options it gives us...

Please everyone sign up/RSVP and attend, we don't want to lose the buffet. Pat, is it possible to suggest to Ammas that they go ahead and do a vegan dinner buffet also open for the public on this Saturday every month (much like they do the Weds buffet?). We have slow months and heavy months and not everyone always RSVPs. I doubt I'd want to drive all the way there for the meetup if there is no buffet to try out when other Cincy Vegetarian restaurants (one in Sharonville) offer a weekly Saturday lunch buffet with vegan options....
