Let's Go to the Movies: John Sayles's Go for Sisters

Let's Go to the Movies:

John Sayles is one of my favorite directors. I think outside of the fact that Sayles funds his own films through writing jobs, what I find most compelling about his work is how rich and compelling all of his characters are. So you can imagine my surprise when Callie from Variance Films sends me an email letting me know that not only is John Sayles’s newest film coming to The Living Room theater but that Variance Films is nice enough to give the group two free tickets to celebrate the occasion.

I will be holding a drawing to pick two luck Celluloid Lovers to receive the tickets. All you have to do to enter the drawing is RSVP to the show. I will announce the winners a few days before the meetup.

Admission Price: $5.00 (If you don't win one of the tickets)

Release Date: March 11th, 2013

Aspect Ratio: 1.78:1

Running Time: 123 Minutes

Country: USA

Unlike our weekly meetups, The Let's Go to the Movies meetups are about getting out of the Paradiso Headquarters and into an actual theater. We will be meeting afterwards for food and causal discussion. If you would like to schedule a Let's Go to the Movies meetup click Suggest a New Meetup at the top of the homepage or you can send me an email directly.

I will be at the theater at least a half hour early if anyone wants to meet before hand. We have met afterwards at Sizzle Pie (http://www.sizzlepie.com/) which is very close to the Living Room Theater and is right across the street from Powell's. I am open for suggestion if anyone would like to meet at another location.

Learn how you can help keep this group going.

I look forward to seeing you there.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Organizer,
Damon

I would see any of their films. Perhaps it wasn't my favorite, but I was appreciative of their character development. Lonestar and Men with Guns are two of my favorite Sayle's films. Thank you once again for creating opportunity.

Well you had a 1 in 6 chance of winning. You can thank Jacinda for blindly picking Mary and yourself.

I don't remember how I got side tracked but I never answered your question. The group's image (http://www.meetup.com...]) is something I did myself. I hung the t-shirt with the eye on a wall and stacked DVDs in front of it. I think you are the first person to comment of the group's banner. That was actually a pain to make (it took 2-3 hours in gimp which I had never used before). I'm a big fan of scenes in films where an audiences is looking out at the audience watching the film. I think it reminds me of my childhood love for Salvador Dalí.

Another amazing film by John Sayles; Thank you all for coming. If I don't see you at the Potluck, I hope to see you soon. We have more films chosen by our fellow Celluloid Lovers until the end of January and then we will get back into our monthly themes.

ooooh I can already see the time slipping away from now, necessary chores and prep, and picking up Alan Wednesday am. Gonna pull out and put the flick $5.00 toward Damon's meetup fees that total $144 a year that he doesn't really seem to get reimbursed for. Perhaps I can propose a "meetup" whereby people can contribute online at any time - or otherwise pledge a cash donation. In the meantime Alan and I are looking forward to the holiday potluck! Thanks again for all your efforts Damon and Jacinda.

Yes, I think we should all kick in (I already did) -- and think that if we each just kicked in even a dollar for every time we see a movie, the fees would be covered. (I hate online donations.)

      December 23, 2013

On the one hand that works because those who actually attend contribute to the film showing. On the other, if every Cinema Paradiso member who uses this site (which in essence is what generates the meetup fee) contributed $1.00 then fees would be covered. But all members don't attend on any kind of regular basis and an online access provides convenience. I rarely attend but want to contribute because as a meetup co-organizer and event host myself, I have much empathy for certain injustices and flawed systems surrounding the meetup environ to which many attendees are not perceptive to. Sometimes, I just LOVE online payment methods but even more I like having the choice. Lets kick it around some at the potluck. We will probably find a couple options to explore that Damon might agree to. Methinks having an open discussion with the organizer is a good place to start - and I'll slip him the five in person :-)

Damon, I may have a conflict with going. Waiting to hear from My youngest daughter as to whether we are meeting today cause we can't on Wednesday. I'll text you as soon as I know if I need to cancel.

No rush, unlike the normal meet ups. There isn't a rsvp limit. If you can make I will hopefully get a chance to meet you sometime soon.

Having been to Film Club events, I'd say more than "a little early."

    December 22, 2013

    • mary

If you think there is going to be a big response, I'd say as early as possible. I generally get there 45 minutes early, then go to Powell's to look at books -- and there have been times when people came 20 or so minutes early and couldn't get a ticket. OR, since seats are designated, not open, could only get a ticket in the neck-breaking front row. If we could COUNT on people coming, only one person would need to buy tickets very early on and choose seats together -- and the rest of us could reimburse. Particularly if somebody plans to go early enough to get a bite to eat ahead of the movie. I for sure will be there on Monday by 6:15 -- and will try for a bit earlier if possible. I will hang around the front door until somebody who recognizes me shows up.... :-)

That is sooooo cool that I won one of the free tickets! I never win anything -- or at least not until now!

Looks like the Portland Film Club is attending the same screening so you might want to get to the Living Room a little early to get a decent seat.
