City Iggies is a group where Italian Greyhounds and their people can meet and play in the city of Chicago!
We want to connect with other Italian Greyhound owners while giving our pups a safer social experience than they sometimes have at a public dog park.
City Iggies is for pure-bred Italian Greyhounds only, because it's our experience that nobody understands a pure-bred IG quite like another pure-bred IG!
(And Chicago has lots of great meetup opportunities for dogs of all other breed-types and sizes!)
It can be tricky bringing together a group of dogs who don't normally live together, and we've all had our share of frightening encounters at public dog parks where our Iggies have been harassed, and even attacked, by Big Dogs AND Little Dogs who don't "speak Iggy."
We feel things have a better chance of staying safe when all dogs in the group share the unique physique, temperament, body language and play style of the pure-bred Italian Greyhound.
We welcome IGs of all ages and backgrounds. Our members have found their dogs through rescue groups as well as professional breeders.
Please read on for additional explanations, acknowledgements, and disclaimers!
Owners who choose to participate with their IGs are 100% responsible for the welfare and comfort of their dogs 100% of the time.
This group is not recommended for small children, especially infants and toddlers.
Even though IGs are known for their sweet temperaments, there is an inherent risk of injury when dealing with animals in a group setting. Small children especially often squeal and do unexpected things that can startle dogs, possibly causing a dog to nip at a child.
Additionally, dogs in a group can become very aroused and may not behave the way these same dogs do when they are by themselves. The excitement level can get very high in a room full of tiny sighthounds, even without the added stimulation of a tiny and unpredictable human!
We do welcome children around the age of 12 and older who know how to behave calmly and quietly around dogs. We want all participants to stay safe and have a nice time!
Our gatherings are not intended to take the place of puppy classes or professional guidance regarding problems with behavior or socialization. Our play dates are informal and unstructured.
We encourage owners to intervene and re-direct the action quietly and and kindly if they see bullying behavior going on between any dogs in attendance.
We expect owners to know their dogs well enough to recognize when they need a break from the action. Some dogs are naturally shy and might become aggressive if they are forced to engage in play.
We recognize that some dogs, and older dogs especially, may want to sniff around and observe more than they want to zoom around! At a City Iggies play date, it's super OK if a dog's idea of a good time is just sitting with his or her people and looking at the other dogs!
We don't charge dues because our Organizer pays for the Meetup site, but sometimes we meet at venues that charge a rental fee, and then we will ask everyone who is able to pitch in a small amount to help cover those costs. Any money we collect beyond the cost of rental fees gets donated to the IGCA Rescue Fund, since many of us found our dogs through IGCA Rescue :-)
And finally, (insert huge smiley face here!) it can be difficult finding places to get together in the city, so we encourage all members to always be on the lookout for locations where we can host group meetups, and to use the meetup site to contact other IG Families for getting together for casual walks and visits!
If the ideas outlined here sound like a good fit for you and your pup, we'd love to see you at the next gathering of City Iggies!
