The Civil Air Patrol is a civilian, volunteer organization and the official auxiliary of the United States Air Force (www.gocivilairpatrol.com). We volunteer our time to train for and execute missions when called upon by the Air Force as well as State and Federal Government agencies.
This group is sponsored by the Hanscom Composite Squadron (www.hanscomcap.org) that runs its operations from a dedicated facility at Hanscom Air Force Base in Bedford, MA. The primary missions involve search and rescue, disaster recovery and photographic flights in addition to aerospace education and cadet training.
You do not need to be a pilot to join. There are air crew qualifications you can obtain without being a pilot (i.e., Mission Scanner, Photographer and Observer) that will be needed in the airplane during training and actual missions. There are ground operations and Mission Base operations positions as well.
As a relevant example of what we do, the Civil Air Patrol was tasked with providing aerial photographs of the entire coast from Maine to Carolina following hurricane Sandy and Hanscom air crews participated in photographing the coast of Mass, the Cape and Islands.
We will schedule Open House Meetup Events periodically that all are welcome to attend.
