Fans of classic Film and British comedy can rejoice in something that the theatre landscape is offering this season. A stage adaption of the famous Ealing comedy The Ladykillers playing at the Gielgud Theatre. Personally, I cannot wait to see this stage version of the fantastic film, so I would be delighted if some of my fellow film fans and lovers of classic British comedy would join me
"The best known of the Ealing comedies of the 1950s and one of the finest British films ever made, 'The Ladykillers' is not something one remakes lightly - as the Coen brothers found out to their cost with a poorly received 2004 version. Still, there's reason to hope that this West End-bound stage adaptation will prove more convincing. Heading up the cast, the marvellous Peter Capaldi is a strong enough comic actor to fill Alec Guinness's shoes as eccentric criminal Professor Marcus, but a big enough personality to impose his own stamp. And James Fleet, Ben Miller, Clive Rowe and Stephen Wight have the makings of a motley crew of fellow villains.
Really, though, it'll all stand and fall on the script, which comes from Graham Linehan, writer of 'Father Ted' and 'The IT Crowd'. He's a great observer of the type of cranks and eccentrics who people 'The Ladykillers' and he's promised a more farcical take on the story than the film. Still, one suspects the warmth of this play's reception will depend upon him striking the right balance between his own, gently-postmodern style of humour and William Rose's beloved original screenplay."
