Sing- and Play-along Handel's Messiah

You can never get too much Messiah, especially when you are singing it and/or playing it AND everyone to the left, right, front, and back are singing/playing it with you.

Of the many Messiahs that we can go to in the area, this one is my favorite. Not only is it a sing-a-long, where the audience gets to sing, but:

There are no soloists. The audience gets to sing all of the choruses AND all of the solos.

There is no one policing the parts. You can sing whichever part you want.

This is not just sing along, it is play along. The orchestra is composed of drop-ins, too.

I get to play this music surrounded by bassoons, oboes, trumpets, violins, and a whole symphony orchestra. They don't usually let recorders into symphony orchestras, but today I'm in!

You can sing and/or play it, too. Just bring your instrument. If you get there early enough, there will be a seat and music (Schirmer edition) provided for you in the orchestra pit. Vocal scores can be purchased there for $9 or bring your own.

Don't sing or play? Get infected by the energy all around you. It isn't sublime and nuanced, it is loud, joyful, and contagious.

The Memorial Church will fill up with singers and musicians. It is glorious every year and will be again.

Date: Friday, December 13, 2012
Time: 8:00 pm (if you want to find us you'd best come to the pre-meetup)
Place: Stanford Memorial Church, at the very end of Palm Drive on the Stanford Campus in Palo Alto
Parking: There is parking all around, but fills up by 7:30.
$15, $10 seniors and student

In some years the event has sold out, so advanced tickets are encouraged. They can be purchased on-line here:

Time: 6pm
CoHo (Stanford Coffeehouse)
Tresidder Memorial Union, 459 Lagunita Dr., on the campus behind the church somewhere. Here is a map.
Musicians (me) will need to leave by 7pm; singers/audience can hang around a little longer.

Please put in your RSVP if you are coming to the pre-meetup.

Meet me (Daniel) in the woodwind section and we'll decide where to go. Perhaps back to the coffeehouse.

It was a lot of fun to play and listen to such glorious music. The pre- and post-meetups where we got to munch and talk to each other were also really fun.

I won't be performing at the EBMC concert but I may play for the jam. Will I see you there on Saturday?

Perhaps not, unfortunately. There's a lot of stuff I need to get done that I'm not doing. Maybe I'll try for January.

What a fun event and what a nice bunch of people you are... Still marveling over Kathryn's lovely singing of the soprano parts that for me were not easy! Daniel, you were a delightful host. Nina, you are so sweet. I look forward to chatting with you again. Hayden, thanks for keeping me company on the drive and for putting up with my sometimes-haphazard driving!

    Hi Daniel et al.,
This event looks absolutely amazing! Unfortunately I only just came across it. Would it still be possible for me to come find you tonight? (I can't really come to the pre-concert meetup but I'd love to have company while singing.)

Daniel, Do you recommend getting tickets ahead of time?

Some years the event has sold out. Advanced tickets are a good idea. I have updated the meetup with that link and updated the ticket price, too.

I would like to car pool if possible. I live in Berkeley, but I can meet a driver at any BART station. I'm happy to chip in for gas money.

Hi Hayden. I live in Berkeley, too, if you'd like me to pick you up. You can email me through the site. Cheers. I think this is going to be really uplifting!

It sounds really fun, Daniel. I really like to sing because it lifts my spirits, but I only know a little of Messiah.

Hey Emily, here are my suggestions: 1. If you read music, get a copy of the vocal score. You can either buy it or check it out from a library. This event uses the edition edited by Proust and published by Schirmer. That probably doesn't make a difference in the vocals, but does to us instruments. 2. If you YouTube "Messiah soprano" or "Messiah alto" you will find a bunch of videos that go through the relevant parts. We only do some sections of the Messiah, not the whole thing. I can get you that list. 3. Everybody sings the solos and choruses. 4. Kathryn, a non-meetup singer friend, brings a whole bunch of her chorus friends, they all sit together, and we join them (the singers among us), so you will be surrounded by people who can sing the parts. Be sure to come to the pre-meetup or you won't find them. 5. Have a blast.
