Let's try a big Russian novel!

I'm going with the FSG translation by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky.

KARAMAZOV is on tons of Best Novels lists. Like these:

I've read lots of Russian literature, but I've never read this. It is time.

WHO WILL BRING...?

Who will bring vodka?

Who will bring borscht?

I will make kolachky. They look like this: http://stresscake.files.wordpress.com/2010/04/1kolacky-lrg.jpg. It is a Polish (or some manner of Eastern-European) treat, but close enough.

See you there!

Not that anyone in a group of literati would be subscribed to Entertainment Weekly (except, I hate to admit myself), but in this week's issue which lists the top 100 movies, books, records and plays, Brothers K is ranked #23 (Crime and Punishment is #14), sandwiched by #22 Wuthering Heights and #24 Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. I will not keep you in suspense: they rate Anna Karenina as #1.

And BTW, if we are tackling The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, the good editors at Entertainment Weekly rate it as #90. I know I am laughably ill-read because I have only read 25 of their titles. At least I have seen 54 of their top 100 movies. (Citizen Kane is their #1 pick)

LOL. I am definitely not as literati as you might think, sir. I'll go check out that article. Thanks for telling us about it!

Unfortunately I didn't get very far in the book and now have a scheduling conflict for tomorrow so I can't come :( I will try to make the next one!

Wow! Food and drink??! This sounds like great fun! No familiarity with Russian food, but I'll try to research and come up with something!

I'll bring vodka if it is legal! Is there a 'brown bag' permit?

We'll be meeting outside, if possible, so I say go for it. :)

Oh man, I've been looking forward to Russian lit! It's really close to another out of town trip, but I hope I can make it.

Timing is no good. Brother's wedding weekend and it's confirmed I'll be out of town by then. I know I'm missing out on a marvelous discussion!

Summer plans not yet firm. I think I'll be in town and if so, I'll certainly participate.
