Android 101 Workshops (Part I)

More of a workshop than a meet up, this will kick off the first in a series of meet ups aimed at giving folks an introduction to native Android development.

We'll be following many of the exercises in the Big Nerd Ranch book throughout this series of meetups, tweaking things a bit as we go and sharing some of our own experiences in all things Android development.

While the book uses Eclipse, we'll be using Android studio and focusing on Android Lollipop.

Please RSVP as we'll be taking the size of the group a bit more seriously in order to accommodate the needs of the group.

We'll post more as we grow closer to the date to prepare those interested.

Thanks and hope to see you there!

Great meetup, but over my head at this point. Would much rather have seen a lower level discussion using the visual tools available in Android Studio, rather than a lot of unfamiliar code.

I'll be there but don't include me in the pizza count. Can't eat it anyway!

I probably need to go buy my first Android shortly. Could people tell me what Android that they have, or which one they will buy soon if the one that they have is old or don't like anymore? (Please reply here, instead of making a new posting so as to not make a mess on the page.) I was also wanting to know peoples' feedback on the various service providers.

In terms of which Android phone to get, there are several factors to consider. Each manufacturer makes their own "look and feel", and that will be the most noticeable difference between them all. I would start by looking at each of the flagship phones and decide which interface makes the most sense to you. If you want a "pure" Android experience, go with a Nexus phone. The other thing to consider is screen size. Most Android phones are between 5 and 6 inches. Pick up each phone and see what you like.

As far as carriers go, I wouldn't worry about AT&T's "talk and surf at the same time". This is also available on Verizon. Even if a carrier didn't have that feature, it is typically not going to affect any apps you write in a noticeable way. Based on your example, if you missed a stock update because you were on the phone, it would update the next time you weren't on the phone and all is well.

Are we required to have the book to participate?

    March 2, 2015

    • David S.

Not required but it might help as we continue to go through the exercises in it :)

Just picked up the book, so I guess I've got skin in the game now... :)

Is this still a possibility? And is this a meetup or more of a workshop?

    January 27, 2015

    • David S.

Yes! For this particular meetup, I'm hoping for more of a workshop setting. I've contacted another group that expressed interest in an Android workshop and will post more details once I gauge interest from them. More details on that to follow!...
