The Return of the Cleveland JavaScript Ninjas!

Hey everyone!

It's time to assemble for the October Gathering of the Cleveland JavaScript Ninjas meetup group!

We will meet on Monday, October 15, 2012 at 6:30pm at Hyland Software located at 28500 Clemens Road in Westlake, OH.  The awesome people at Hyland have made available their giant conference room with three projectors, audio and internet connectivity.  They're also buying us pizza, refreshments and giving us cookies.  Three cheers for Hyland!

We'll also have two talks at the front end of this meetup:

(1)  Introduction to Node.js and ExpressJS for building Web Apps

Chris Duxbury from Hyland Software is going to introduce the group to Node.js.  Node lets you use JavaScript to build server-side applications ranging from Web Applications to socket servers for real-time data streaming.  The NodeJS community is rapidly growing and has assembled a wide range of modules that can be snapped together to quickly put together really great applications.

Chris will introduce use to this infrastructure as well as ExpressJS ( which has quickly become the defacto standard to building web apps using Node.  Express lets you define controllers (routes), assemble data models and pass them to views using Jade, EJS or other templating languages.  His presentation will include slides and live demo so that you can get a front row seat on the Node.js madness.

(2)  JavaScript Tricks with RFC-2397 (Phishing and mini DB)

Ron Finnerty will dive deep into RFC-2397 which defines a means for encoding data into URLs.  With the advent of URL shorteners like TinyUrl, this opens up the possibility of using these services as small-scale database of sorts.  Ron will discuss how this is done and show us an example in JavaScript of manipulating such data.

For those who are curious, you can browse to the URL below and see some of this magic at work for a very small image:

See if you can grock how that works.

Hands-On Coding!

In this meetup, we're going to have some fun mixing things up with a hands-on coding session based around a JavaScript-oriented set of problems and challenges.  These are fun coding and learning exercises that people can work on individually to hone their skills.

Afterwards, we'll have a discussion of the various solutions that people came up with.  Since there are many good ways to solve things, we'll chat about what works and what are the tradeoffs to different approaches in JavaScript.

This is ideal for any level of JavaScript enthusiast.  If you're new to JS or have never coded before, you'll be able to jump right in and get your fingers dirty.  If you're pretty seasoned, we'll still be able to throw you a couple of zingers and you'll also be an excellent resource for others.

We'll distribute ZIP files at the start of the session with everything you need so that you can dive right in.  Also, you can take these home with you afterwards, play around, and bring your questions to the next meetup!

These sessions will be great for everyone.  No matter whether you're just starting out in JavaScript or are seasoned and packing heat, this will be fun.  It's a great chance to learn, to teach and to do some great stuff with JavaScript.

We hope to see you there!

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
