Nimisila Reservoir

Nimisila Reservoir is the most southern lake in the Portage Lakes system. It is 742 acres of water with approximatly 14 miles of shoreline. It is known for numerous types of waterfowl. There are also several nesting pairs of Ospreys and at least two Bald Eagles in the area. There are no gas motors allowed on the lake and you seldom hear road traffic. It's a great place for a long paddle on a nice quit body of water usually with considerable wildlife to see. The lauch ramp that I like is at the intersection of S. Main St and West Nimisilla Rd. There's a yellow blinking caution light at the crossroads.

I went for a long paddle today at Nimisila. Never saw the water that clear. At one point with a 90 degree turn of my head I could see a Bald Eagle, several Ospreys, two swans, a couple of blue herrings not to mention a couple of Green herrings trying to lay low. Beautiful day to be out on the water. Lots of inexperianced paddlers were also out. Fun to watch.

Great Lake for distance and practicing rescues, or just watching the leaves turn their colors to Fall!

Ryan, Is this reservoir spring fed? 50-55 degrees seems colder than I would have thought.

Just measured my lake temp. It was 66 degrees still. Should be similar at Nimisilla

Since we have a number of people going on Sunday I thought I would ask is anyone interested in practicing wet exits and rescues. Nimisila is a good lake to practice on. If you are interested please let me know so I can bring the proper gear to get wet. I would presume we would fully paddle the lake before we would think about getting wet. We might even be able to talk John into showing us some kayak rolls. If anyone is interested make sure you have at least a wet suit. The water will be 50 to 55 degrees. I was in water a lot on Monday and Tuesday and it actually was pretty refreshing after paddling.

I'll just paddle. No wet exits this time. Looking forward to paddling Nimisila, it has been on my list. I live in Southern Lorain County but like to find new places to explore.

Practicing an assisted rescue would work for me. Guess I better dress appropriately, eh?

Chris - The Lake is normally pretty calm. Depending on temps of water and air and good rule of thumb is if the combined temperature of air and water is below 130 degrees where a wet suit. Then again your not on Lake Erie so I would dress for comfort. It will be a good chance for you to try out your drysuit if it's not to warm. If it's windy that day you might see 2 foot waves at most so I think you'll enjoy the trip. We'll constantly be close to shore so if you dress in layers it will be easy to reduce as the day progresses.

Ok, I was just asking a general question about what people wear under a dry suit, not specifically about this paddle next Sunday!

For colder paddling events (later this fall) what do you guys wear under a dry suit?

I do have a wet suit for cooler temp water, but I understand that a dry suit protects you from the "wet" dangers associated with cold water, but layers must be worn under a dry suit to protect you from the "cold" of the water!

As the weather gets cooler, what should we wear?

I have a wet suit and a dry suit, but what should I wear under the dry suit?
