Muskingum Water Trail/ Fall colors

This sounds like a terrific outing to catch the Autumn at peak....

As Ryan says it will require good planning with start and finish logistics.  Sign up and stay tuned...   The length may be shortened.....

The Muskingum River has 112 mile water trail that goes from Coshocton to Marietta. My thoughts are we take a Saturday trip this October from the Baird access in Coshocton to the ramp in Dresdan. It is a 20.5 mile trip and starts and ends at designated water trail staions. It's the most undeveloped section of the river and should be very pleasant paddle. Our trip will end a few miles upstream of the first lock so we don't have to coordinate that. This will take a lot of coordination. We will need vehicles at both locations. My suggestion is we meet in Coshocton around 8:30 and be unloaded by nine. Take the load out vehicles to Dresdan and be back by 10:00. It will take around 4 to 5 hours to paddle is my guess. My rack can handle up to 3 kayaks and 4 people. Anybody interested please feel free to throw out any additional suggestions.

A very enjoyable paddle, even with the hour or so of rain. Ryan, great job organizing and planning, everything including your time guestimates were spot on. Nice to spend the day on the water sharing good conversation, laughs, and dinner with all. I am realizing that I love to participate in these 15-20 mile paddles. Looking forward to joining other long paddle challenges in the future. Ryan, could you arrange for a tailwind the next time??
    Chris, How were the mussels??

Muskingum River Sasquatch - It was the middle of a 20 mile paddle down the upper Muskingum River. Five hardcore paddlers on a chilly and wet day. After stopping for a short break four of us continued downriver not realizing Chris had not followed us. The first to turn around was Eagle Eye Gerry. He immediatly noticed something strange. At first he thought it was an aging Sasquatch, white in the middle darker at the head and black below the waist. Scared for Chris's safety, Gerry in a valiant effort hurredly paddled up river, apparently to warn him because we all know he wasn't getting out of his boat. At last it was not to be. It was actually Chris that he saw making an awkward attempt to relief himself without a front day hatch in his wetsuit. As the four of us then waited for our wayward paddler, Chris decided it was now or never. For almost 2 monthes he has been holding back how far he has come in his Biatholon efforts. There in the middle of a small rapid Chris went for it.

Boy, with this kind of entertainment, I'm really sorry I missed it! Chris, I look forward to your actual factual report, not that Ryan's highly doctored version wasn't worth a giggle as well.

    • Chris F

Glad to be the constant source of entertainment! LOL!

The put-in location was perfect. The take out could have been better. The river was more technical then we expected which made for an interesting and challenging day. 4 stars only because I would not send a group of novices alone.

Well, gang...Polly has spoken. Spending five hours in the drizzling rain in a kayak isn't her idea of a good time, so we're cancelling. Hate to be that guy, but...I guess we're that guy this time around. Enjoy yourselves and stay safe. We'll catch up with you another time.

Hey- you cannot back out- we were counting on you bringing the grill!! How else are we supposed to cook out!!!

Lol@Amanda, we understand you point David, maybe things will be better for the next time! I hope paddling in the rain will make me appreciate the sunny days a bit more! Cold and rainy day is still better than a staff meeting on a nice warm day!

Hope everyones ready for a cool wet October day. Just a reminder make sure everyone brings appropriate clothing and gear. High temp is going to be around 50 with on/off light rain. River levels have remained good so we should have a pleasant paddle.

    October 18, 2013

    • Ryan P.

Chris, a wet should be adequate. Water temps are still around 60 degrees.

    Ryan,

I don't know if it still matters, but I was able to retrofit the extra j-bar onto my TracRac. I have 4 carriers on the truck, and barring kayak to kayak interference will be able to haul 4 boats if needed.

    • Ryan P.

That actually might come in handy tomorrow.

Chris/Gerry - I think were going to use your vehicles to get everyone back from droping off their cars at the takeout. Gerry's Kayak will go back on my jeep and Chris's can go on John's truck. John's got nice kayak racks so your beautiful boat should be in good hands. We have 8 for sure coming and 3 or 4 more I'm waiting to hear from on Bradstreet.

Definatly better to know before Saturday. It will be interesting to see who all shows up. Weather is not going to be the best.

My plan is a wet suit for morning in the 50s and rain!

Ryan, I think I see the access point you are describing, and I posted a pic of the map. Did I get close to the "concrete access" launch point?

See photo for map detail and address...

    October 18, 2013

    • Ryan P.

Also the Launch Point is on the property of a company called "Bairds Concrete". I contacted the company and they assured me it was a safe place to launch with plenty of parking for everyone.

We'll be on the water at lunchtime. I presume there won't be any paddle-thru Mcdonald's on the river, so we'll pack a snack in our boats. Is there a plan to pull to shore at some point or should we pack something that's snarfable while we paddle?

    October 16, 2013

    • Ryan P.

Really Amanda? After camping with Gerry and Chris do you really think I want them cooking for me.

I need to find out if David and his wife are going and for some reason the website won't let me send him an e-mail directly. I'm pretty sure I have the driving all worked out I just need to verify who's comming

    October 16, 2013

    • David

Hi, Ryan. Don't know why you can't msg me directly, but here I is. I was looking over the itinerary this morning; my concern would be the pace. We wouldn't want to hold you guys up. You're talking a 4mph pace, minimum, faster if you're stopping for breaks. That's not a problem for us, with a current. It'd be tough with no current, for 4-5 hours. Our plan would be to drop our yaks and take our car to the take out, then catch a ride back to the yaks with someone else, if available. That way if we end up being anchors, we can cut loose from you guys and get to the car when we get there. No harm, no foul.

      October 16, 2013

    • Ryan P.

I really don't think it will be a problem. If your both coming we'll make sure your car is one of the ones we take to the pull out site. As far as pace goes I'm not worried about it. It should be a pretty paddle and I don't think anyone will be in a big hurry. My only hurry is to be on the water by 10:00 after that there is no timetable as far as I'm concerned. Looking forward to seeing you there.

Hello Everyone. It's Time to start getting this trip organized. I've had 2 request to change this to Sunday but I am unable to do that do to family obligations. I would like everyone comming to verify how many boats they can carry on there car and how many boats there bringing. That would be extremly helpful in organizing this event. The idea is to have the boats unloaded by 9:00. Someone would stay with the boats while the rest of us drive their cars down to the takeout about 25 minutes away. Be back by 10:00 and get on the water. One or two people can hopefully drive us all back. We have several people from Bradstreet joining our trip as of now so I'm looking at 9 or 10 boats on the water. Let me know if you have any additional. Specifically to John and Amanda - Change your schedule and get your butts there!!!! Should be a neat trip.

I'm going to be sad all day but unfortunately can't change my plans! We'll just have to do another good paddle like this before it gets too ugly out!!!

      October 14, 2013

  • David

We're planning, but not 100%. If we come, we'll have a RAV4, so two extra seats. No more space on our kayak rack, tho.

    October 13, 2013

  • Gerry H.

    Ryan,

Sounds good. I will drive. Can fit five peeps and two boats...

    October 13, 2013

Saturday would be the only opportunity for my wife and I. Our rack handles two, but unless the wife bails, we're full-up on rack space.

I would love to do this but can't on sat- could do Sunday tho

If you go on Google Earth and go to Bridge St in Coshocton you get a good view of the put-in spot I picked. We can shorten the run by 2 to 2 1/2 miles by using another put in location in Coshocton but I don't know of any other take out location between there and Dresdan. If anyone is

    October 2, 2013

    • Ryan P.

knows of any additional spots that would be welcome information.

      October 2, 2013

  • John M.

I `m not able to do the 19th. Sunday the 20th would be a go,or the following Sunday 27th.

    October 2, 2013

    • Ryan P.

Lets see what everyone thinks. Saturday definatly worked better for me. Sunday would be pretty tough do to family obligations.

      October 2, 2013

  • Chris F

Should I use my nice cedar strip kayak, or should I take my 9.5 foot boat?

    October 1, 2013

    • Ryan P.

The rivers pretty calm with no rapids. For the distance were going (even if we shorten it) you'll want your Chesapeake. Your 9.5 will wear you out trying to keep up.
