Lakewood High School Roll Sessions

Keelhaulers offer Kayak rolling sessions at Lakewood High School. Cost is $6.00 per person. YOU MUST BRING YOUR OWN GEAR! All boats must be clean and if you have a rudder it must be removed. Helmets will be required and please bring a registration form. You can find it at keelhaulers.org under the Instuctions tab. These are not classes but meetups where experianced rollers help those that are learning.  In case of severe weather conditions, please check the message board at keelhauler.org for cancellation information.  Also, if members of our group are going to attend these sessions, I think they should strongly consider joining Keelhaulers. A family membership is $20/year which is nominal. A membership is not required to attend but if we are going to learn from their members over the winter, we should support their organization!

Chris, John ,with his Tempest, an me worked on a layback roll with some success understanding the need for patients. I didn't meet any others as there were many with white water yaks.

Good to know John is making progress on the layback (standard Greenland roll?)!

Out of town this week. See you all at Orange and Lakewood on March 1 and March 8. By that time, I should have my rack on my new car.

Assuming there is no white out, I wouldn't mind splashing around too. Time of day yet to be established?

Indicators will take place in 2014.

Great to see these sessions posted. Thank you Judy for digging them up and listing them for out meeting last weekend. As we all know rolling, while not a requirement for CSK, is very important tfor fuller safety approach.

We will be posting "indicator dates" for primary safety requirements in December to include treading water, wet exiting and various rescue techniques. Indicator dates will be evaluations of each member wishing to participate in our broader paddling experiences, especially, beyond the breakwall on Lake Erie.

Okay, ill try to source a helmet. Will any kayak work? I have a tampico 140. This isnt just for white water kayaks, is it?

    November 21, 2013

    • Ryan P.

My understanding is any kayak can be rolled. Some are harder then others. That being said the design of the Tampico looks pretty normal and should be an average boat to roll. Make sure you have a snug fitting spray skirt so that it doesn't pop off when you roll over. If you have to buy one get it with a neoprene tube for your body. Those tend to be easier then a traditional sea kayakers spray skirt.

Per conversation in November Keelhauler meeting: Any hard shell helmets would do even a bik helmet is ok. Helmets are required by the pools. Any clean kayak is ok for pool session.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
