Now that we've completed our HTML/CSS course, we're ready to start our next series.
The next series is entitled "Aoirthoir's Toolkit". Students will be learning hands on the exact tools I and my teams use. You'll learn among other things the following:
* Wordpress Complete (Installation, Authoring, Editing, Management, Theming, Plugins, Multisite and more!)
* Subversion, backups, data loss prevention, keeping yo danged house in order, NEVER lose data, and more!
Security with tools and methods such SSH, SCP, SSHFS, Encrypted Thumbdrives, KeepassX, Obfuscation, sandboxing and more!
PHP, MySQLi, Krudh, including proper programming and database techniques, coding standards and AABP (Aoirthoir's Arrogant Best Practices) and more! (I am working on seeing how many sentences I can fit more! into at a time!)
Project planning, delegation, teamwork, yelling, swearing, hatin' on all languages but COBOL. And more! (see I did it again!)
And yes, MORE!
These classes are going to be hands on. From the first wordpress class you'll have an installation of wordpress on our student site to practice with. Over the term of the course you'll continue to update the content, style and programming in the back end. So WordPress will become your tool to learn other things like MySQL and PHP in depth. At the end of the course you'll be able to export everything you've done so you can import it into your own site in the future.
(NOTE: Those that have a dreamhost site may just choose instead to work right on their own sites. But I'm not going to support a dozen different hosting services in a free class, so anyone without a dreamhost account will get a free student account from me).
Additionally those that dig in with programming will be working on Free and Open Source projects to cut their teeth on. The project will be of the student's choosing and will require collaborating with other projects in the foss world. Should a student choose to work with us on any of our FOSS projects (add1tocobol, Krudh, any WordPress themes or plugins or more! :D ) we'll we certainly won't complain. .
There are materials that can be purchased and for quite a few of the classes I'll be using my extensive resource of publications. However, frankly a great deal of the information you need for these things is available free online. GOOGLE IS YOUR FRIEND. Yes it is. So the materials we are going to work with will often simply be those provided directly by the projects in question (The WordPress CODEX, php.net, mysql.com etc).
Guest teachers....yes we can has them! I am trying to see whom we can coerce into teaching at a guest spot now and again. Yes I am looking at you my WordPress, Social Networking, and Graphics Designer Peeps(TM) (That's trademarked anyone uses it I am going to like majorly sue or something!).
So stay tuned to find out more about guest spots and when and who will be filling them.
Now this is the important stuff so pay close attention.
We've only got about a couple of weeks the next series starts. I will be running two different classes every week. The different classes will be teaching the same things, albeit in different orders. So those that want to dig into HTML5 right away, can join us on Thursdays at 10AM. Those that want to dig into WordPress right away can join us on our weekend class. I will have a day and time sometime in the next couple of days. In the meantime...
If you are coming to either class, you need to come to one of two Orientation sessions I am offering:
Orientation 1, Sunday December 12th, 3pm.
Orientation 2, Monday December 13th, 7pm.
21139 Lorain Road
Fairview Park, Ohio
If you are coming you HAVE to RSVP on the meetup for the appropriate date AND you have to call me. Please understand I have to know exactly how many are coming so I can make appropriate seating and refreshment arrangements. If you RSVP yes, it is important that you be there.
Finally, these classes are FREE. They are offered on a donation basis. If you can answer yes to ALL of the following questions, then please donate:
1. Did you like the class?
2. Did you learn something?
3. Do you have the ability to donate?
4. Do you WANT to donate?
On the other hand if the answer to any of these is no, then don't donate. The classes will continue regardless of donations. (But mountain dew or coca cola donations will not only ensure continued classes, but really fast and interesting ones as I chug and teach...)
