As we have a number of members here from the Old School programming I wanted to let yall know that we are now starting a Cobol Study Group and Class. This is going to have a HEAVY focus on Cobol on the web, with OpenCobol being the main focus.
Of course that means GNU (what most of yall call Linux) training as well. However, the OpenCobol and Add 1 to Cobol team members have been working on a Native Windows Installer for OpenCobol. This means that you won't even need any GNU/Linux layers.
As well another one of our team member's companies has been working on a layer for STATEFUL web apps with OpenCobol. This will be TRUE stateful apps, not mimiced in any fashion. When they add that software to our Free Software repository (free as in free speech), it will be available for all.
Additionally a lot of apps are about to hit the Free Software community in Cobol thanks to the folks at Cobol Magazine and some of the Add 1 to Cobol members.
So if you would like to have a different experience with your web apps, if you already know Cobol and would like to expand your skillset to the web, if you're looking to create new web apps that will be maintainable for decades into the future, head over to the Cobol meetup group that I run and join the classes. If you join the classes I'm asking folks to get in at the start so that I don't have to go back to the beginning each class. http://cobol.meetup.com/1/
is the meetup andhttp://cobol.meetup.com/1/calendar/2009-10
is the first series of classes.
Many kind regards,
