Skat School - "Defense! Defense!": All playing levels welcome!

De-fense! De-fense!

There is little doubt that defense is the much harder part of the game of Skat to play well.  The overall key is to look beyond the cards in front of you and picture where the remaining cards must lie based on the clues you receive from bidding, and the cards played (or not played) by the other players (ESPECIALLY your partner).  In good defensive play, you and your partner must be a cohesive team that read each other's signals, put the lead in the right place and lead the suits necessary to bring the Player to defeat.  It isn't easy, but that's why we have Skat School!  This session will get some of our newer players up to speed for tournament play.

Skat School is the chance for beginners to learn Skat, developing players to hone their skills at Skat and experienced players to participate in a shared learning experience that can still better their play at this truly amazing and unique card game.

The topic of our sessions will be adjusted to fit the playing level of the participants, so if you are a beginner, don't worry--we will gladly get you started playing Skat. If you are more experienced, we will have something helpful for you too.  Typically at Skat Schools, the game score is drastically de-empahsized (often ignored) and we table talk, but with a definite purpose in mind.  That purpose is to not just learn how to play Skat, but also to learn how to PLAY WELL.

I am extending a special invitation to those players who have signed up for our Meetup group, but still don't know the game well enough for club play to come on out and join us for a relaxed and fun evening at a card-friendly venue with great Mediterranean food.

We don't bite, but we just might schnibbel for your tens!

This was a good night, despite my absent-minded move of leaving the teaching materials, freshly printed out, sitting on my office table at home. Doh! We did a whole session of table talking our way through the hands. The take-home messages were: the Strong Defender/Weak Defender rule, the Long Road-Short Suit/Short Road-Long Suit rule, the need to return you partner's opening lead, signaling, covering the player's Jack lead once, and pitching the losing red jack early. Good group, and I loved discovering Aladdin's Mujadra plate--thanks Nadine!

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
